What ma'as means

1

to reject: to refuse someone or something as worthless and push it away

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintySettled

This is the dominant biblical word for a deliberate, weighty rejection. It is not a passing dislike but a decision to treat a person, an offer, or a standard as worthless and to have nothing more to do with it. Because it is a relational verb, who does the rejecting and who is rejected matters more than any change in the word itself.

The Bible turns it most often into a two-way drama between God and his people. The people reject God, his law, his ways, and his messengers; in answer, God rejects them, their king, or their worship. The same verb on both sides is part of the point: the rejection is mutual and answers like for like.

It also works at the ordinary human level, where people spurn one another or despise good counsel, and it can even be turned inward, where a sufferer in the book of Job recoils from his own life or retracts what he has said. Across all of these the action is the same: to set something aside as having no value.

2

to flow away or run: to dissolve and drain off like water or a sore

TranslatabilityDirectCertaintyStrong

A separate, much rarer word that happens to be spelled the same. It has nothing to do with rejection. It describes liquid that runs off and drains away, a picture of something losing its substance and disappearing.

It surfaces only twice. In one place a sufferer's skin breaks down and runs; in the other, the wicked are wished away like water that pours out and is gone. Both images share the idea of melting and draining to nothing.

Job 7:5Psa 58:7(8)

Disputed

Whether this flow away word is a genuinely separate root or a textual byform of another melting verb.

  • majorityA distinct verb meaning to flow or run, listed separately in the standard lexica.; HALOT, s.v. מאס II
  • minorityA textual variant or byform of מסס to melt, to be read or emended there.; BDB, s.v. מאס II

What scholars say about ma'as

The standard lexica treat two homonyms: מאס I to reject or spurn, by far the more common, and מאס II to flow or run, attested only at Job 7:5 and Psalm 58:7. For the first, HALOT, BDB, and DCH agree on a core sense of refusing and casting aside, with the theological reciprocity between God and Israel highlighted in TDOT and TWOT. Job 42:6 is a long-standing crux: the verb lacks an object, and major commentators divide over whether Job despises himself, recoils, or retracts his words.

Where scholars disagree about ma'as

Whether the spelling מאס represents one word or two unrelated homonyms.

  • majorityTwo unrelated words: a common verb to reject and a rare verb to flow or run.; HALOT, s.v. מאס I, מאס II; BDB, s.v. מאס
