What sekhel means

insight: the clear-headed good sense that sizes up a situation and acts on it wisely

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintyStrong

This word names practical intelligence: the good sense that grasps what a situation calls for and handles it well. It is less about how much a person knows and more about how skillfully they act on what is in front of them. The Bible keeps tying it to real-world results, so a person who has it wins favor and gets things right.

Most often it is simply that quality of mind. "Good understanding" is a standing phrase in Proverbs, and it wins favor with both God and people (Proverbs 3:4); it is called a fountain of life to the one who has it (Proverbs 16:22), and it is what lets a person hold back anger instead of flaring up (Proverbs 19:11). Abigail is introduced as a woman of exactly this good sense, in pointed contrast to her harsh husband (1 Samuel 25:3). At Nehemiah 8:8 the same word tilts slightly toward the "sense" or meaning of a text: the Levites gave the people the sense of what was read so they could understand it. And at Daniel 8:25 the identical word turns dark, describing a ruler who uses his shrewdness for cunning, self-serving schemes.

It sits close to several neighbors. Discernment (בִּינָה) is the ability to tell one thing from another; this word is the practical good sense that then acts on what it sees. Wisdom (חָכְמָה) is the broad skill for living well, while this is the sharp insight working inside it. Knowledge (דַּעַת) is what a person knows; this is knowledge put to work as sound judgment. Its own verb (שָׂכַל) describes acting with such insight and so succeeding.

What scholars say about sekhel

The lexica treat H7922 as the segholate noun of the root שׂכל, glossing it as insight, prudence, good sense, or understanding, with the practical nuance of acting successfully on what one grasps (BDB; HALOT; DCH). The recurring wisdom-literature collocation שֵׂכֶל טוֹב ("good understanding") denotes the socially effective prudence that secures favor (Prov 3:4; 13:15; Ps 111:10). At Neh 8:8 the noun is used of the "sense" or meaning conveyed in exposition, and at Dan 8:25 it carries a pejorative nuance ("cunning") imposed by the wicked referent rather than by the lexeme itself. TDOT and the theological dictionaries treat the substantive within the broader śkl word-group alongside the verb, noting its overlap with בִּינָה and חָכְמָה while distinguishing its emphasis on competent, outcome-oriented judgment.
