What azav means

1

to leave: to let go of someone or something, whether by simply walking away or by abandoning what one was bound to hold onto

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintySettled

At its core this word means to release one's hold and move away from a person, place, or thing. The same act can be morally neutral or morally loaded depending on what is left and whether a bond was broken. A man leaves his father and mother to marry; a fugitive drops the coat in his captor's hand; a farmer leaves the edge of his field for the poor. None of that carries blame.

The weight comes when what is left is something a person was obligated to keep. To leave a covenant partner, a parent, or God is not a neutral departure but a betrayal, and most of the heavy uses in the Bible are exactly this: Israel forsaking the LORD, or the cry that God has forsaken his people. The word does not change meaning; the gravity comes from the relationship being broken.

A third group sits between the two: to leave something behind for someone else to have, or to leave off an attitude or activity. Here the focus is on what is deliberately let go or set aside rather than on who is wronged. Across all of these the single thread is the loosening of a grip and a moving away from what was held.

to restore or repair, as in setting a wall or building back in order

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintyObscure

A small number of standard lexicons treat one or two verses as belonging to a completely separate word that happens to be spelled the same as the common verb for leaving. This second word means to set in order, restore, or repair, and is connected to roots in related languages that carry that sense.

The clearest candidate is the report of rebuilding Jerusalem, where the workers are said to have done something to the city that the older reading takes as restored or fortified rather than left. Because the spelling is identical to the ordinary word, this reading is far from certain, and many translators and scholars keep the verse under the usual word for leaving by understanding it as leaving a section of wall finished and moving on. This entry records the minority reading so a reader knows the question exists.

What scholars say about azav

The standard lexicons treat the common verb as one root meaning to leave, depart from, or abandon, with the moral weight of forsaking arising from the object and the relationship rather than from a separate word. BDB, HALOT, and DCH also note a rare and debated second root meaning to restore or set in order, tentatively read in Nehemiah 3:8 (and occasionally Exodus 23:5), connected to cognate roots in Arabic and Ugaritic. The theological dictionaries trace how the word becomes a key term for covenant unfaithfulness, both Israel forsaking the LORD and the lament of feeling forsaken by God.

Where scholars disagree about azav

Whether the ordinary verb for leaving has a rare homonym meaning to restore or repair, read by some in Nehemiah 3:8.

  • contestedBDB, HALOT, and DCH list a separate root meaning to restore or set in order, citing Nehemiah 3:8 (and tentatively Exodus 23:5), supported by cognates in related languages.; BDB, s.v. עזב II; HALOT, s.v. עזב II
  • contestedOthers keep a single root and read Nehemiah 3:8 as the ordinary word for leaving, understanding it as leaving a stretch of wall complete and moving on, so no second word is needed.; TWOT, no. 1594, s.v. עזב
