What milḥamah means

armed conflict between opposing forces: the condition of being at war, or a specific battle

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintySettled

The word covers the full range of what English distributes between "war" and "battle." It names the state of being at war (the long conflict between two kingdoms), the activity of fighting (the day a king marches out), and the single encounter (the clash where the battle turns and men fall). All three run together in the original because the same phenomenon, armies in armed confrontation, gives rise to all of them.

The word regularly describes a person's identity and occupation: a man of war, someone trained for war, men who go out to fight. It marks a season in a community's life ("there was war between them all his days"), and it names the sphere God sometimes occupies ("the LORD is a man of war," Exodus 15:3). It also appears in Wisdom texts as something to be managed with counsel and strategy, pointing to a more institutional sense, warfare as a craft that requires thought, not just force.

Because one Hebrew noun covers territory that English distributes across several words, translators have many options: battle, war, warfare, fighting, combat. None of these is wrong in a given passage, but none fully captures the word on its own.

What scholars say about milḥamah

The word derives from the root meaning "to fight" or "to do battle," itself related to a broader Semitic root that in several languages also covers eating, though the warfare sense dominates overwhelmingly in Biblical Hebrew. HALOT and BDB both treat this noun under one entry with contextual nuances (the sustained state of war, the single battle, the craft of warfare), explicitly treating these as shades of one meaning rather than distinct homonyms. DCH volume 5 confirms the same classification. The semantic range is not disputed: all standard references agree it is one word with one core referent.

The theological weight of the word falls especially on the phrase "wars of the LORD," which appears in Numbers 21:14, 1 Samuel 18:17, and 25:28 to describe military campaigns understood as carried out under divine authority. This usage reaches its sharpest formulation in 1 Samuel 17:47, where David declares that the outcome of the clash belongs to God rather than to military strength. TWOT (s.v. lhm II, entry 1104) discusses this theological pattern in detail. The Deuteronomic legislation on warfare (Deuteronomy 20) builds an extensive set of rules around the word, and the Deuteronomic history narrates Israel's wars with consistent reference to divine initiative. The Wisdom texts (Proverbs 20:18; 24:6; Ecclesiastes 3:8; 9:11) treat warfare as a domain governed by strategy and timing rather than raw force. The prophetic vision of peace consistently names the abolition of war with this word (Isaiah 2:4; Micah 4:3; Hosea 2:18; Zechariah 9:10), confirming its standing as the standard Hebrew term for organized armed conflict across the full range of biblical literature.
