What maggephah means

a deadly blow: a striking that brings sudden mass death, whether by disease or by the sword

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintySettled

At its root this word means a striking, a blow delivered with force. Wherever it appears, something or someone is hit hard enough to leave a great many dead all at once. What changes from verse to verse is the instrument of the blow, not the idea of the blow itself.

Most often the blow is an outbreak of deadly disease that sweeps through a people, and English Bibles render it "plague" or "pestilence." But the same word can name a rout on the battlefield, where an army is cut down in huge numbers, and there English shifts to "slaughter" or "defeat." In one case it even names a single swift stroke that takes one person's life. The common thread is the sudden, sweeping, deadly striking, which the Bible almost always presents as coming from God's own hand.

Because the picture underneath is a blow rather than a specific cause, the word travels easily between an epidemic and a military disaster. Reading it well means watching for what kind of blow the surrounding verses have in view.

What scholars say about maggephah

The standard lexica treat מַגֵּפָה as a single noun from the root נגף ("to strike, smite"), glossing it as "blow" and then distinguishing its applications: (a) pestilence or plague, frequently as the smiting instrument of YHWH; (b) slaughter or defeat inflicted in battle; and the isolated sudden "stroke" of Ezekiel 24:16. BDB and HALOT both organize the entry this way, under one lexeme rather than as homonyms, since the sense of a forceful, death-dealing blow underlies every occurrence. The word clusters heavily in the Baal-Peor and census-plague narratives (Numbers 25; 2 Samuel 24 / 1 Chronicles 21) and in the eschatological judgment of Zechariah 14. TWOT (entry on נגף) notes the same derivational link between the verb, the cognate noun נֶגֶף, and מַגֵּפָה.
