What ḥalaph means

1

to pass: to move on past, sweep through a place, come to an end, or drive clean through

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintyStrong

At its root this verb is about passing. Something moves past you, goes on further, rushes through a land, or slips out of existence entirely. The same picture covers a spirit gliding by in the night, a flood tearing across a country, the rain finishing and moving on, and a human life running out like a fast ship on the water.

Because passing can be gentle or violent, the word stretches across a wide field. When a weapon passes clean through a body it means to pierce or strike through. When someone passes beyond a boundary that was set for them, it edges toward overstepping or breaking a law. Whether the motion is soft or forceful, the constant idea is that of moving on, through, or away.

This is also the sense that carries the word's most famous note of sadness: things that pass do not last. Rain, idols, and mortal life all pass, and the verb lets a poet say so in a single stroke.

Isa 24:5

Whether חלפו חק in Isaiah 24:5 means the people violated (overstepped) the statute or changed (altered) it.

  • majorityThey violated or overstepped the statute; the verb here means to pass beyond a fixed limit, matching the parallel verbs for transgressing the laws and breaking the everlasting covenant.; BDB, s.v. חלף
  • minorityThey changed or altered the ordinance, taking the verb in its common causative sense of exchange.; HALOT, s.v. חלף
2

to change: to exchange one thing for another, or put a substitute in its place

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintySettled

When the verb is used in a way that makes something else pass on, it means to change or exchange. You take off one set of clothes and put on another, you swap someone's wages again and again, or you trade one animal for a different one. The old thing passes out and a new thing takes its place.

This is a plain, everyday use with no special weight to it. It covers changing your garments before entering a royal court, replacing fallen brick buildings with better ones, and the warning in the law that a person may not quietly substitute one dedicated animal for another. The core is simple: one thing goes, another comes in its stead.

Nuances

2bto substitute, replace: put a different thing where the first one was
Lev 27:10Isa 9:10(9)
3

to renew: to come up fresh again, or to gain new strength

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintyStrong

The same idea of one state passing into another can turn hopeful. Instead of the old thing merely being replaced, the thing itself comes up new. A tree that has been cut down sprouts again from its stump. Grass springs up fresh in the morning. A warrior's bow feels new in his hand. Most memorably, those who wait on the Lord renew their strength and rise up like eagles.

Here the passing is a passing into freshness. The word does not simply mean to repair or patch up. It pictures a genuine new growth or a new supply arriving to take over from what was spent, so that the tired or the cut-down starts again as if young.

Nuances

3bto sprout again, spring up fresh: a tree or grass putting out new growth

What scholars say about ḥalaph

The lexica (BDB, HALOT, DCH) treat חלף as a single root whose base idea is "to pass on," with the derived stems extending it to "change" and "renew." In the qal it means to pass by, pass through, or pass away (Job 9:11; Isa 8:8; Ps 102:26b); the same qal covers the concrete "pass through" of a weapon piercing the body (Judg 5:26; Job 20:24) and, in Isa 24:5, an overstepping of law. The piel and hiphil are causative: to cause to pass on, hence to exchange or substitute (Gen 31:7, 41; 41:14; Lev 27:10; Ps 102:26a) and to renew or put forth afresh (Isa 40:31; 41:1; Job 14:7, 29:20). The Arabic cognate khalafa, "to come after, succeed, replace," undergirds the change and replace branch and connects it to the notion of succession. Whether the passing senses and the change and renew senses reflect one polysemous root or converged homonyms is debated, though the standard lexica present them under one entry. Several occurrences are text or sense critical: Ps 90:5, 6 (the qal of grass, read by most modern versions as springing up afresh rather than passing away); Hab 1:11 (whether the wind sweeps by or the aggressor's mind changes); and Isa 24:5, where חלף חק is read either as violating or as altering the statute.
