What tipharah means

splendor on show: beauty that catches the eye and brings honor to whoever wears, owns, or gives it

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintyStrong

This is the showy side of glory. The more common Hebrew word for glory (כָּבוֹד) starts from the idea of weight, the solid honor a person carries. This word starts from beauty: gold thread on a robe, jewels at the throat, a temple faced with precious stone, a crown on a head. What is splendid here is meant to be seen, and the seeing is the point, because the admiration comes back to its owner as honor.

From there the word stretches out from objects to people and peoples. The same splendor that hangs on a robe can rest on a life, a family, a city, or a whole nation as the thing it is famous for. Across the Old Testament it names:

  • fine clothing, jewelry, and ornament that make someone splendid to look at
  • the crowning distinction a person or family is admired for, such as gray hair on a righteous old man
  • the good name a people carries among the nations around it
  • the radiance that belongs to God himself, in his sanctuary and in his acts
  • the boasted magnificence of a proud power on the edge of losing it

Isaiah uses the word more than any other book, and works the whole range on purpose. The splendor Assyria wears in its haughty eyes, and the splendor drunken Ephraim wears like a fading flower, are named with the very word used for the crown of beauty God becomes for the survivors. That is not loose writing. It is the prophet insisting that splendor is real, that it belongs finally to God, and that whoever seizes it for himself is wearing something that will wilt.

What scholars say about tipharah

תִּפְאֶרֶת, with the rare byform תִּפְאָרָה (Isa 28:5; Jer 48:17) and the pausal variant תִּפְאָרֶת, is a feminine abstract noun formed with a taw preformative on the root פאר (GKC §85 lists it under the tiqṭal type alongside תִּקְוָה). BDB heads the entry "beauty, glory" and divides it into (1) beauty, finery (Isa 3:18; 52:1; Ezek 16:17, 39; 23:26; 2 Chr 3:6; Jer 13:20; Isa 44:13; 28:1, 4, 5); (2) glory of rank (the priestly vestments, Exod 28:2, 40; the עֲטֶרֶת תִּפְאֶרֶת of Prov 4:9; 16:31; Isa 62:3; Jer 13:18; Ezek 16:12; 23:42; Esth 1:4), of renown (the לְשֵׁם וּלְתִפְאֶרֶת formula, Deut 26:19; 1 Chr 22:5; Jer 13:11; 33:9), and as an attribute of YHWH (1 Chr 29:11; Ps 71:8; 89:18; 96:6; Isa 63:12, 14, 15; 64:10; and as his gift, Isa 46:13; 60:19; the ark, Ps 78:61); and (3) honour of the nation (Lam 2:1) and glorying or boasting (Judg 4:9; Prov 17:6; 19:11; 20:29; 28:12; Isa 10:12; 13:19; 20:5; Ezek 24:25; Jer 48:17). HALOT glosses the triad Schönheit, Pracht, Herrlichkeit; DCH works descriptively from the collocations, noting the pairing with כָּבוֹד, הוֹד, הָדָר, and גָּאוֹן and the binding to עֲטָרָה and to vocabulary for garments and jewelry, which places the word simultaneously in the fields of honour, headdress, and kingship. The consensus distinction from כָּבוֹד (weight, gravitas, manifest presence) is that תִּפְאֶרֶת foregrounds the aesthetic and ornamental side of glory, which is why Exod 28:2 pairs them rather than doubling one term. The Septuagint renders it chiefly with δόξα, with καύχημα in the boasting passages and κόσμος in the ornament passages; the Vulgate alternates gloria, decor, and superbia. The comparative evidence is thin: the semantically attractive Arabic فخر fakhara "to boast" fails as a regular cognate on the middle radical, and no secure Akkadian, Ugaritic, or Phoenician cognate is standardly claimed. BDB and Klein separate the "bough, branch" material (פֹּארָה, Ezek 17:6; 31:5) and the gleaning verb of Deut 24:20 as a distinct, doubtful root (BDB's "II פאר"). Hausmann's TDOT article is the fullest theological synthesis; Mettinger's Dethronement of Sabaoth is the standard reference for the כָּבוֹד theology against which this word's more aesthetic profile is set. The Kabbalistic sefirah תפארת is a medieval development, not a biblical sense.

Where scholars disagree about tipharah

Whether the root behind the word is cognate with Arabic fakhara "to boast, be proud," or has no secure comparative pedigree and must be explained within Hebrew.

  • majorityThe Arabic comparison fails on regular sound correspondence, since Arabic kh does not answer to Hebrew aleph, so the root is best treated as a Northwest Semitic item with no secure cognate.; HALOT, s.v. תִּפְאֶרֶת; E. Klein, A Comprehensive Etymological Dictionary of the Hebrew Language, s.v. פאר
  • minorityThe semantic fit with Arabic boasting vocabulary is close enough to be worth pressing as a genuine cognate, a line older lexicography pursued.; Gesenius-Buhl, Hebräisches und Aramäisches Handwörterbuch über das Alte Testament (earlier editions), s.v. פאר

Whether the verb "to beautify" is formed from the noun for an ornamental headdress, or the nouns of this family (including this one) are formed from the verb.

  • contestedThe nouns, including תִּפְאֶרֶת and פְּאֵר, derive from the verb פאר I "to adorn, beautify, glorify."; E. Klein, A Comprehensive Etymological Dictionary of the Hebrew Language, s.v. פאר
  • contestedThe concrete headdress may be the original item, with the verb formed from it, though the lexica do not settle the direction.; BDB, s.v. פְּאֵר
