What tuv means

to go back, or to send something back: whether a person's mind comes back to him, an object is put back where it belongs, or a word is sent back as an answer

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintySettled

This is the Aramaic verb for going back, and for sending something back. Its picture is simple: what had gone away comes again to where it belongs. In Daniel it is a king's sanity coming back to him after his long madness. In Ezra it is the gold and silver vessels of the temple being sent home to Jerusalem.

The same verb also covers speech. In Aramaic you do not merely answer a person, you return a word to them, and this is the verb that does the returning. Once that habit is familiar the verb can mean "answer" all on its own, with no word for "word" anywhere in the sentence, as when three young men tell Nebuchadnezzar they have no need to answer him. Aramaic has a plainer verb for answering, עֲנָה, which carries almost every spoken exchange in Daniel; this verb tends to appear when a reply is being sent back to the one who asked, and in Ezra that reply is an official letter.

So the three shades below are one motion seen from three angles:

  • something lost comes back to the person who lost it
  • someone puts an object back where it belongs
  • someone sends a word back to the one who spoke

English needs a different verb for each, so the thread joining them vanishes in translation. The Hebrew verb for returning, שׁוּב, behaves the same way on a much larger scale, right down to its own habit of bringing back word when it means to answer.

What scholars say about tuv

The standard lexica of Biblical Aramaic treat תוב as a single verb answering to Hebrew שׁוּב, with the peal intransitive ("return, come back") and the haphel causative ("bring back, restore"), and, with פִּתְגָם or an equivalent object, "return word, answer." HALOT and BDB (Aramaic section) both present the reply usage as a development of the causative rather than a separate root, and Rosenthal's grammar treats the haphel forms here as regular. Of the eight occurrences, three are peal (Aramaic Daniel 4:31, 33 = English 4:34, 36), where the king's understanding, majesty and splendor return to him; the remaining five are haphel. Ezra 6:5 uses the causative for the physical restoration of the temple vessels, a legal and administrative usage at home in the Persian chancellery documents embedded in Ezra 5 to 6 and analyzed by Williamson. Daniel 2:14 (התיב עטא וטעם) is the one syntactically awkward case: the two nouns may be the object of the verb or may characterize the manner of Daniel's reply, and English versions diverge accordingly, though the resulting sense (Daniel answered prudently) is not in doubt. In Daniel 3:16 the verb stands with no expressed object, an absolute use of the reply sense. No lexicon posits homonymy here; STEPBible's three sub-glosses ("return", "rescue", "reply") are contextual renderings of one verb, and the "rescue" gloss reflects the restorative causative rather than a distinct root.
