שַׁלְוָה“ease”The word שַׁלְוָה (shalvah), meaning undisturbed quiet, is the well-known form of this small family. It names the settled calm of a city or a household with nothing pressing on it: peace inside the walls, a plain meal eaten without a quarrel. Scripture also turns the same word against people, for the comfortable ease of those who feel untouchable and stop listening, and Daniel uses it for the show of calm a schemer hides behind before he strikes. The other form of this word, שֶׁלֶו (shelev), is the same noun in a slightly different shape and carries exactly the same meaning, so the two are studied together here.
