What sho'ah means

sudden, sweeping ruin: catastrophe that overwhelms a person or a place without warning, and the emptied waste it leaves behind.

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintyStrong

This is a word for catastrophe on the largest scale, and the Bible attaches two ideas to it almost every time. The ruin is total, carrying off whatever it reaches. And it arrives unannounced.

That second idea is written right into the verses:

  • ruin overtakes a man who never sees it coming, and he falls into it himself (Psalm 35:8)
  • ruin lands on Babylon suddenly, and she has no way to ward it off (Isaiah 47:11)
  • ruin travels in from far away on the day God settles accounts (Isaiah 10:3)

Because the ruin is pictured as arriving rather than simply sitting there, the word slides easily into weather. An invading army sweeps in like a storm, roaring as it comes, blotting out the land like a cloud. Two other verses look at the far end of the same event instead and name the stripped, empty ground a disaster leaves behind. There the writers set the word beside a rhyming partner meaning "desolation" (מְשׁוֹאָה), used purely for the echo, roughly the way English pairs "waste and wasteland."

One word covers all of that because the writers are not interested in cataloguing kinds of trouble. They are naming the moment when everything gives way at once, whether the thing that gives way is a person, a city, a nation, or a stretch of farmland.

What scholars say about sho'ah

The standard lexicons treat שׁוֹאָה as a noun of devastation with a small but real spread of usage. HALOT distinguishes a storm sense from devastation and from waste ground; BDB glosses "ravage, ruin, devastation, waste" and connects the noun to the verb שָׁאָה "roar, crash," which is the basis for the rendering "devastating storm" at Ezekiel 38:9 and Proverbs 1:27; DCH catalogues the same range. The masculine byform שֹׁא accounts for the suffixed plural at Psalm 35:17. Derivation is debated (a link to שָׁאָה I "roar, crash" supports the storm nuance, while others align the noun with a root of desolation), but the debate turns on origin rather than on the agreed sense of devastating ruin. Three passages carry recognized exegetical questions: Psalm 63:9, where the Greek and Latin versions reflect a reading "in vain" (as though שָׁוְא); Psalm 35:17, where the suffixed plural has prompted the proposal to read a form of שָׁאַג "roar" in view of the parallel כְּפִירִים; and Job 30:14, where commentators divide between "amid the crash" and "amid the ruins." The fixed assonant pair שֹׁאָה וּמְשׁוֹאָה at Job 30:3, Job 38:27 and Zephaniah 1:15 is best taken as a rhetorical doublet rather than as evidence of two independent lexemes, and the same holds for the two lexicon sub-entries שׁוֹא and שׁוֹאָה, which are forms of one noun rather than homonyms.
