What qeresh means

a board: a flat, upright plank of worked wood

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintySettled

A board (qeresh) is a single flat piece of wood that has been cut and finished so it can stand as a structural panel, not a rough branch or a beam. Almost every time the word appears, it names one of the upright wooden frames that formed the walls of the tabernacle, the portable tent-sanctuary Israel carried through the wilderness. Each frame was overlaid with gold, fitted with pegs at the bottom that dropped into silver sockets, and locked to its neighbors by horizontal bars, so the boards together made a rigid, gold-sheathed shell that could be taken apart and set up again at each camp.

The word is so closely tied to that structure that the books of Exodus and Numbers use it almost as a technical term for those frames. Outside the tabernacle texts it surfaces only once, in a poem about the merchant city of Tyre, where it names the planking of a ship's deck. The thread that holds both uses together is simple: a board here is a smooth, deliberately shaped piece of wood set in place as part of a larger built thing, whether the wall of a sacred tent or the deck of a trading vessel.

What scholars say about qeresh

The standard lexica (BDB, HALOT, DCH) treat qeresh as a single noun meaning board or plank, used overwhelmingly of the upright wooden frames of the tabernacle in Exodus 26, 35-40 and Numbers 3-4, with a single transferred use in Ezekiel 27:6 for a ship's deck. There is no dispute about the basic sense. The chief scholarly discussion concerns the reconstruction of the tabernacle frames themselves (their dimensions, whether they were solid boards or open latticed frames, and how the tenons and silver sockets fit together), a question debated in the major commentaries on Exodus rather than a question about the word's meaning.
