What nuph means

1

to move something back and forth through the air: to wave, swing, wield, or brandish it.

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintyStrong

The picture behind this word is a sweeping motion of the hand, or of something held in the hand. What English calls it depends on what is moved and why. You wield a blade over a stone, you wave or shake a hand at a place, you brandish a fist at someone weaker, you shake rain down from the sky. Underneath all of these is the one swinging, to-and-fro motion.

Its most common use is a religious one, the wave offering. A worshiper or a priest presents a gift to God by moving it with a set gesture at the altar, marking it as handed over. Nearly every place this word appears in the law of offerings, this is what it describes. Scholars debate whether that gesture was a side-to-side waving or a lifting up and setting down, which is why some translations call it a wave offering and others an elevation offering.

Away from the altar the same motion often carries force or menace. To wave the hand over a place can mean to claim power over it or to threaten it, as when God stretches out his hand against a nation or a river, or when someone raises a hand against an orphan. In a few places the motion turns toward scattering or separating: shaking rain loose from the clouds, or sifting nations as grain is shaken in a sieve.

Whether the priestly gesture named by this verb (the tenupah) was a horizontal waving of the offering or a vertical elevation, a lifting up and setting down as an act of dedication.

  • majorityA horizontal waving, moving the offering from side to side before the altar; this is the reading kept by the standard lexicons and the older translation tradition.; BDB (Brown-Driver-Briggs), s.v. נוף; HALOT (Koehler-Baumgartner), s.v. נוף
  • minorityAn elevation rite, raising the offering and lowering it as a gesture of dedication rather than a side-to-side waving.; Jacob Milgrom, Leviticus 1-16, Anchor Bible (1991); G. A. Anderson, "Sacrifice and Sacrificial Offerings (OT)," in Anchor Bible Dictionary 5:870-886 (1992)

to sprinkle or scent something with fragrance: to perfume it.

This is a separate word that only happens to be spelled like the word for waving. It appears a single time, in a seduction scene in Proverbs, where a woman says she has perfumed her bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. The sense is to sprinkle or scent a place so it smells sweet.

Because it turns up only once and looks exactly like the far more common waving verb, it is easy to miss. The standard dictionaries keep the two apart as unrelated words.

What scholars say about nuph

The standard lexicons (BDB, HALOT, DCH) treat this as a causative verb meaning to move to and fro, wave, or wield, with the hand or a hand-held object as what is moved. Its dominant use is technical and cultic: the priestly presentation gesture over the offering (the noun tenupah), traditionally the wave offering. A widely discussed proposal by Jacob Milgrom (Leviticus 1-16, Anchor Bible) argues that henip in the ritual denotes an elevation or dedication rite, a raising and lowering rather than a horizontal waving, a reading followed by G. A. Anderson and adopted by several modern translations; the lexicons and older tradition retain the horizontal waving sense, so the exact motion remains contested even though the ritual function (dedicating the portion to God) is agreed. Outside the cult the verb describes brandishing the hand in hostility or authority (Isaiah 11:15; 19:16; Zechariah 2:9; Job 31:21), waving a tool (Exodus 20:25; Deuteronomy 23:25), and, by extension, shaking down rain (Psalm 68:10) and sifting nations (Isaiah 30:28). The single occurrence in Proverbs 7:17 is generally assigned to a separate root meaning to besprinkle or perfume (BDB nwp II), unrelated to the waving verb.
