What nus means

to flee: to run from danger, whether to escape it or to reach safety

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintySettled

This is the ordinary Hebrew word for taking flight. At its core it pictures someone in motion away from a threat, and the danger is what drives the whole picture: an army breaking and running, a person fleeing a pursuer, a guilty man bolting from a tempting situation. Most of its uses report the rout of an army or the escape of an individual under attack.

The same word also names the hopeful side of flight. When the danger is behind you, the verb describes running toward refuge, and the law gives it a fixed home in the cities of refuge: a person who kills someone accidentally "flees" to one of those towns and is safe there. The motion is identical; what changes is whether the writer is looking at what is being escaped or at the safety being reached.

Finally the word is used figuratively for things that slip away and disappear. Shadows flee as the sun moves, sorrow and sighing flee away when God restores his people, the sea flees back at his rebuke. In every case the underlying image is the same fast, decisive departure, simply transferred from a fugitive to a thing that vanishes.

What scholars say about nus

The standard lexica treat H5127 as a single verb meaning "to flee, take flight," with the military rout, individual escape, and figurative "vanish" uses as contextual shades of one sense rather than separate words. HALOT and BDB note its concentration in narratives of battle and pursuit and its fixed legal use for fleeing to a city of refuge. Most lexica keep this verb distinct from the similar-looking root meaning "to be high, lift up a banner," though a few of the figurative passages (such as Isaiah 59:19) are parsed differently by different authorities.
