What mush means

to depart or remove: to move away from a place or position, or to make something move away

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintySettled

At its core this verb describes motion away: someone or something leaves the place or position it held. In its plain use it is physical, as when the pillar of cloud never departs from in front of Israel, or when Joshua stays so close to the tent of meeting that he does not move from it.

From there the word stretches to things that are not objects at all. Law, promises, kindness, wickedness, and even a firmly driven tent peg can all be said to depart or give way, almost always in a statement about whether they will last. This is where the verb does its most memorable work: in the great assurances that God's steadfast love, or his words, will never depart.

When the same verb turns outward, it means to take something away. Now a person, or God, is the one doing the moving: removing a land's guilt in a single day, wrenching a yoke off necks, or stripping away a people's fields.

The nearest everyday Hebrew word for the same idea is סור, which covers turning aside and taking away in ordinary speech; this word is rarer and weightier, and it gravitates toward solemn promises of permanence.

What scholars say about mush

מושׁ (mûš) I is a verb whose qal is intransitive ("depart, withdraw, give way") and whose hiphil, along with a few qal forms (Zechariah 3:9), is transitive and causative ("remove, take away"). HALOT and BDB treat the sense as stable and distinguish it from the homonymous מושׁ "to feel, grope" (Strong's H4184). The figurative uses cluster in negated declarations of constancy (Joshua 1:8; Isaiah 54:10; 59:21), where the verb marks the endurance of covenant realities. No meaning-level dispute attaches to the root.
