What kephor means

1

frost: the thin white crust of ice that settles on open ground overnight

TranslatabilityDirectCertaintySettled

Frost turns up only three times in the Hebrew Bible, and each time it is doing something specific. In the wilderness the layer of dew lifts and leaves behind something fine and flaky, and the only way the writer can describe it is by comparison: it looked like frost on the ground. That is how the manna is introduced to the reader, by pointing at a familiar winter sight.

The other two appearances belong to poetry about God and the weather. One psalm pictures him giving snow like wool and scattering frost like ashes, as easily as someone flinging a handful across a field. In Job, God asks who gave birth to the frost of the sky, and the expected answer is that nobody did but him. Frost suits both scenes because it appears overnight with no visible cause, which makes it a natural picture of something only God produces.

The word names the white coating itself, not the cold that made it. It belongs with the other winter words of the Hebrew Bible: snow (שֶׁלֶג), ice (קֶרַח), and the dew (טַל) that frost is in effect the frozen form of.

a bowl: a gold or silver vessel counted among the holy furnishings of the temple

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintyStrong

This is a treasury word. Every time it appears, someone is counting valuables. David hands Solomon the plans for the temple and fixes the weight of gold for each gold bowl and of silver for each silver bowl. Cyrus releases the vessels Nebuchadnezzar had carried off from Jerusalem, and the tally runs thirty gold bowls and four hundred ten silver ones. Ezra weighs out twenty gold bowls worth a thousand darics before the journey home.

Because the word only ever surfaces in an inventory, the text never says what one looked like. What the lists do tell us is consistent: the metal is gold or silver, the pieces come in matched sets, and they are holy, set apart for the house of God. The shape is guesswork, which is why English versions swing between "bowl", "basin", and the older "bason".

Hebrew has several words for such vessels and they are not interchangeable. The sprinkling basin (מִזְרָק) is named for its job at the altar, throwing blood against its sides, and another basin (אֲגַרְטָל) is listed two lines earlier in the very same Ezra inventory. This word is defined not by what it does but by what it is worth and where it belongs.

What scholars say about kephor

The major critical lexicons treat this spelling as two separate words. HALOT, BDB, and DCH each list a bowl or basin of precious metal (1 Chronicles 28:17; Ezra 1:10; 8:27) and, as a separate entry, hoarfrost (Exodus 16:14; Psalm 147:16; Job 38:29). The meteorological sense is secured by its parallels: with snow in Psalm 147:16, with ice in Job 38:29, and by the simile describing the manna in Exodus 16:14. The vessel sense is secured by context alone. All three attestations sit in inventories of cultic furnishings, quantified by weight (1 Chronicles 28:17; Ezra 8:27) or by count (Ezra 1:10), and none carries descriptive detail, so the form of the vessel is not recoverable from the biblical text; the versions accordingly vary between bowl, basin and dish. Both nouns have traditionally been derived from the root kpr, "to cover", the frost as what covers the ground and the vessel by way of shape or lid, but the derivation of the vessel term remains uncertain, and the etymological question is independent of the two well established senses.
