What mizraq means

a large, wide bowl, the vessel used to fling or pour out liquid

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintySettled

The name comes from the verb meaning to toss or dash, so this is the bowl you throw liquid from, not a small dish you eat out of. Picture a wide, shallow, open basin big enough to hold a good quantity of liquid and swing it out in a single motion.

By far its most common home is worship. At the altar the priest caught the blood of a sacrifice in one of these bowls and dashed it against the sides of the altar, and the same bowls held the wine that was poured out as a drink offering. Because they were part of the sanctuary's standard equipment, they turn up again and again in the inventories of the tabernacle and the temple, made of bronze, silver, or gold, and they are among the treasures the Babylonians later carried off.

The one clear exception keeps the same object but moves it out of the sanctuary: the prophet Amos pictures the rich lounging and drinking wine from bowls this size, and the shocking image is exactly that they are treating an outsized vessel as a personal wine cup while their nation falls apart. Same bowl, ordinary table instead of altar.

What scholars say about mizraq

The standard lexicons (BDB, HALOT) treat this as a single noun derived from the verb zaraq, to toss or dash, and gloss it as a bowl or basin, specifically the wide vessel used to fling sacrificial blood against the altar and to pour out libations. It belongs to the recurring inventories of sanctuary vessels made of bronze, silver, and gold, and appears as a large drinking bowl only in Amos 6:6, where the term itself is unchanged and the shift is purely one of setting.
