What ya'ad means

to fix something by agreement: to set a person, time, place, or task in advance, and so to come together at the arranged point

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintySettled

At its heart this verb is about setting something firmly ahead of time. Someone appoints a person to a role, names a time, or hands a task to an agent, and from then on that arrangement is fixed. It is the language of a promise kept, an assignment made, a rendezvous agreed.

Because an appointment is something two sides share, the verb naturally turns reciprocal. When people (or God and people) keep an arranged meeting, they are said to come together at the agreed place. This is where the noun for a sacred "appointed time" and the phrase "tent of meeting" come from. The same root that fixes the appointment also names the keeping of it.

The senses below simply follow that arc: first the act of appointing (a person, a time, or a task), then the meeting that results, which ranges from God graciously keeping his rendezvous with his people to crowds gathering, often to plot or make war. The stronger forms push it toward summoning an opponent to a showdown, and the passive toward simply being set in place.

What scholars say about ya'ad

The standard lexica (BDB, HALOT, DCH) treat יעד as a single root meaning "to appoint, fix by agreement," the base of the well-known nominal derivatives מוֹעֵד (an appointed time or meeting) and the phrase אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד (tent of meeting), and probably related to עֵדָה (congregation). The active (qal) is used of designating a slave-woman as wife (Exod 21:8-9), fixing a set time (2 Sam 20:5), and commissioning an agent or instrument for a task (Jer 47:7). The reflexive/reciprocal niphal is the dominant stem and means "to meet by appointment," split between God's gracious self-appointed meeting with Israel at the sanctuary (Exod 25:22; 29:42-43; Num 17:4) and the assembling of a group, frequently with hostile overtones of conspiracy or muster for war (Num 16:11; Josh 11:5; Ps 48:5[4]; Amos 3:3; Neh 6:2, 10). The hiphil carries a forensic nuance, summoning an opponent to a legal confrontation (Job 9:19; Jer 49:19; 50:44), and the hophal denotes being set or positioned (Jer 24:1). A few occurrences rest on difficult text: Mic 6:9 and Ezek 21:21[16] are both grammatically hard, and the versions and modern critics diverge on the verb there.
