What ḥakham means

to be wise: to have, gain, or give the practical skill of living well

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintySettled

In Hebrew, being wise is less about raw intelligence and more about skill in living. To be wise is to understand how the world actually works and to act accordingly, so that life turns out well. The book of Proverbs presses this over and over: watch how the ant works and be wise, keep company with wise people and you will become wise. Wisdom of this kind is something a person grows into.

The same word also points to the source of wisdom. God, and the teaching that comes from him, can make a person wise, even wiser than their teachers or their enemies. So wisdom here is not only something a person is born with; it can be given and it can be taught.

The word carries a sharper edge as well. The very skill that makes someone wise can curdle into mere cleverness. Pharaoh proposes to deal shrewdly with Israel, and Ecclesiastes warns against making yourself too clever. Being wise and being crafty are close neighbors inside this one word, and what separates them is what the skill is used for.

What scholars say about ḥakham

The standard lexica (BDB, HALOT, DCH) treat חכם as a single root covering the semantic field of skill, prudence, and practiced good judgment, with the stems distributing the sense: the qal for the stative and inchoative "be/become wise," the piel and hiphil for the factitive "make wise, instruct," the pual for an ingrained or passive skill (Prov 30:24; Ps 58:6[5]), and the hithpael for reflexive "show oneself wise" or, pejoratively, "act craftily" (Exod 1:10). Wisdom scholarship (von Rad, Wisdom in Israel; Fox's Proverbs commentary; the TDOT and NIDOTTE articles) stresses that biblical חכמה denotes competence in living well rather than abstract intellection, a range broader than English "wisdom" and continuous with the technical "skill" of craftsmen.
