What zara means

1

to sow: to scatter seed on prepared ground so that a crop will grow

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintySettled

This is the everyday word for planting a field. A farmer breaks up the soil, casts the seed across it, and waits for the harvest. Because that whole cycle of scattering now and reaping later was so familiar, the Bible reaches for the same word to picture other things that work the same way.

The most common stretch is moral: what a person sows is what they will reap. Sow honesty and you gather a real reward; sow wrongdoing and the harvest is trouble. The point is not gardening but consequence, the law that actions ripen into outcomes you cannot dodge.

A second stretch is national. When God promises to sow his people in the land, he means he will plant them there to take root, grow, and multiply, the way a sower fills an empty field. Even scattering Israel among other nations can be described this way, as a planting that will one day bear fruit far from home.

The senses below hold together because they all share one picture: seed goes out, time passes, and a harvest answers for it.

2

to yield or produce seed, and so for a woman to conceive

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintySettled

Here the focus shifts from the farmer to the seed itself. A plant that produces seed, or a field that brings forth its own crop, is the subject, not someone scattering it.

The same word reaches into human life: when a woman conceives and carries a child, the Bible can describe her as one who produces seed. The image treats new life like a crop coming up from within, a natural extension of a word built around growth and offspring.

What scholars say about zara

The standard lexica treat the qal as the basic agricultural verb to sow, with the hiphil and niphal carrying the productive and conceptive nuances. HALOT and BDB list the literal sense to scatter seed alongside the figurative sow-and-reap idiom common in wisdom and prophetic literature, and note the hiphil use of plants producing seed (Genesis 1:11-12) and of a woman conceiving seed (Leviticus 12:2), with the niphal passive at Numbers 5:28. TDOT surveys the metaphorical extension whereby Yahweh sows his people in the land as a promise of restoration and growth (Jeremiah 31:27; Hosea 2:23; Zechariah 10:9). The cognate noun zera, seed or offspring, shares this range and reinforces the agricultural-to-genealogical span.
