What ohel means

a tent: the portable cloth-and-pole dwelling of a roaming people, by extension the household it shelters or the worship-tent where God met Israel

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintySettled

An ohel is a tent, the basic home of people who lived on the move with their flocks. Goat-hair cloth was stretched over poles, staked down, then struck, packed onto animals, and pitched again wherever the herds led. This is the picture behind almost every use of the word: Abraham at the door of his tent in the heat of the day, Jacob's family camped with their flocks, Jael waiting in her tent.

From that concrete object the word reaches naturally toward the people inside it. A tent stands for a man's household, then for a whole tribe or army, which is why Israel rallies to the cry "to your tents, O Israel." Going home is going "to your tent," so the same word names both the shelter and the family life it holds.

Its weightiest use is for the tent of meeting, the portable sanctuary God told Israel to build in the wilderness. Calling God's dwelling a tent was deliberate: while Israel journeyed, God journeyed with them in a tent like their own, the place where He met Moses and where the cloud of His presence settled. These are not three different words but one word following the life of the people who used it: the shelter they lived in, the home it stood for, and the holy Tent at the center of the camp.

What scholars say about ohel

Standard lexica (HALOT, BDB, DCH) treat ohel as a single noun, "tent," with a metonymic extension to the household or people who dwell in it and a technical use for the wilderness sanctuary, the tent of meeting (ohel moed). The lexica do not posit a separate homonym; the two STEPBible seeds ("tent" and "tent: home") are the literal object and its metonymy of the same word. Theological dictionaries (TDOT, TWOT) stress that naming God's dwelling a tent expresses His presence with a journeying people, the conceptual background to later sanctuary and dwelling-with-God themes.
