What plouteō means

to be or become rich: to hold, or come into, an abundance, whether of money and possessions or of something else of great value

TranslatabilityDirectCertaintySettled

The word simply means to have wealth, or to come into it. Greek uses one verb for both the settled state ("be rich") and the change into it ("grow rich, become rich"), so context decides whether a person already holds riches or is gaining them. In the New Testament the plain, money-and-possessions sense fills the picture of the traders who "grew rich" from Babylon and the wealthy whom Mary sings of being sent away empty.

But the same verb reaches past money. A person can be rich toward God, rich in good deeds, or made rich through Christ's poverty. Here "rich" keeps its ordinary force of having far more than enough; only the treasure has changed. This is what lets the word carry a warning and a promise at once: the craving to get rich in the first sense can leave someone bankrupt in the second. The wealth itself is named by a companion word (πλοῦτος), and making someone else rich by a third (πλουτίζω).

Once, the verb turns toward God himself: he is "rich toward all who call on him," not hoarding his abundance but pouring it out. Read this way, the word that so often exposes misplaced confidence also describes the generosity that supplies what people truly need.

What scholars say about plouteō

πλουτέω is the intransitive verb of the πλοῦτος word group, alongside the adjective πλούσιος and the causative πλουτίζω. Usage from the classical period into Koine runs from literal wealth to metaphorical abundance. BDAG distinguishes the possession of earthly goods (Lk 1:53; 1 Ti 6:9; Rev 18:3, 15, 19) from being rich in something (Lk 12:21 εἰς θεόν; 1 Cor 4:8; 2 Cor 8:9; 1 Ti 6:18; Rev 3:17, 18), and treats the construction with εἰς in Rom 10:12 (πλουτῶν εἰς πάντας) as God's bounty toward all who call. The Septuagint regularly renders Hebrew עשׁר with this group. Hauck and Kasch trace the group's theological turn, in which true wealth is relocated from possessions to a right relation to God.
