What kindunos means

danger: a real threat of harm or loss that a person is exposed to

TranslatabilityDirectCertaintySettled

This is the ordinary Greek word for danger, the state of being exposed to a genuine threat of harm. It names the peril itself, the looming possibility that something could go badly wrong, whether that harm is physical injury, death, or ruin. In the New Testament it always points to concrete threats a person actually faces, not to a vague sense of unease.

Both of its uses gather it into a list. Paul piles the word up eight times over in 2 Corinthians 11:26, cataloging the hazards of his travels: rivers, robbers, his own people, foreigners, the city, the wilderness, the sea, and false brothers. In Romans 8:35 it stands among the hardships that might seem able to cut believers off from Christ's love, alongside trouble, hardship, persecution, famine, nakedness, and the sword. In each place the sense is the same, so the whole word is a single meaning.

Greek also has a matching verb, κινδυνεύω, which describes the act of being in danger. The noun here names the threat; the verb describes standing under it.

What scholars say about kindunos

The lexica treat κίνδυνος as the standard noun for danger, risk, or peril, with an established range in classical and Hellenistic Greek (LSJ; BDAG). Both New Testament occurrences fall within this single, uncontested sense: the eightfold anaphora in 2 Corinthians 11:26 and the hardship catalogue of Romans 8:35 (EDNT, s.v.). It is cognate with the verb κινδυνεύω, and no scholarly disagreement attaches to its meaning.
