What tarmit means

deceit: treacherous dealing that betrays the trust of the person taken in

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintyStrong

This is a rare word for deceit, and where it turns up tells you a great deal. Five of its six appearances stand in the prophets and the Psalms, in settings where deception has hardened into a way of life: a city that grips its deceit and refuses to turn back (Jeremiah 8:5), people who wander from God's commands and whose scheming proves to be a lie (Psalm 119:118), a tongue that will no longer be found in the mouth of God's remnant (Zephaniah 3:13).

Its sharpest use is Jeremiah's attack on the false prophets. Twice he says they prophesy "the deceit of their own heart" (Jeremiah 14:14; 23:26). The vision is not something God gave them, and not even something they borrowed from another; it is what their own minds manufactured and then dressed up as a message from God. The deception runs in two directions at once, fooling the hearers and the prophets together.

The remaining verse, Judges 9:31, uses a slightly different form of the word and has been argued over for a long time. Zebul sends word to Abimelech, and the phrase either says he did it under cover of deception or names the place where Abimelech was staying.

Hebrew has a crowded vocabulary for this, and each member of it does different work: שֶׁקֶר names the false thing itself, the lie told or the oath broken; מִרְמָה is the common word for calculated fraud and cheating; רְמִיָּה leans toward slack unreliability, the bow that fails the archer. All three are far more frequent than this one. Built on the verb רָמָה, meaning to fool someone who had every reason to trust you, this word keeps that broken trust in view.

Whether the phrase in Judges 9:31 uses a word for deceit or names a place.

  • contestedIt is a word for deceit, so Zebul sent his messengers under cover of deception; the unusual spelling has prompted the suggestion that the text should read the more common Hebrew word for deceit.; BDB, s.v. תָּרְמָה; DCH, s.v. תָּרְמָה
  • contestedIt is a place name, the Tormah identified with the Arumah where Abimelech was staying in Judges 9:41, so the phrase says where the message went rather than how it was sent.; HALOT, s.v. תָּרְמָה

What scholars say about tarmit

תַּרְמִית is a feminine noun formed with a ת prefix from the root רמה II "to deceive, betray" (H7411); BDB, HALOT, and DCH agree on the gloss field "deceitfulness, treachery, fraud," and there is no live disagreement over what the word denotes. Five of the six occurrences show the form תַּרְמִית (Jer 8:5; 14:14; 23:26; Zeph 3:13; Ps 119:118). The sixth, Judg 9:31 בְּתָרְמָה, is filed by BDB under a separate entry תָּרְמָה; BDB questions the form and points to the more usual בְּמִרְמָה, while HALOT records the alternative that בְּתָרְמָה is a toponym identified with the אֲרוּמָה of Judg 9:41, a reading followed in much recent commentary on Judges. The Jeremiah collocation תַּרְמִית לִבָּם, of prophets who prophesy the deceit of their own heart, stands parallel to שֶׁקֶר "falsehood" and to קֶסֶם and אֱלִיל in Jer 14:14, placing the word in the vocabulary of self-generated pseudo-revelation (see TDOT and TWOT on רמה). In Ps 119:118 it again pairs with שֶׁקֶר, and the line has been construed both as "their deceit is falsehood" and as "their scheming is in vain," without affecting the sense of the noun. The Septuagint renders the word within the δόλος word field.
