What tikhon means

middle: the one that sits between the outer two in a set already counted out, such as the middle floor, the middle bar, or the middle watch of the night.

TranslatabilityDirectCertaintySettled

This is a counting word more than a picture word. It does not say that something lies inside or among other things; it labels one item as the one between the ends, and it shows up where a set has already been laid out in order. Ezekiel 41:7 puts all three labels in a single sentence: the lower story (תַּחְתּוֹן), the middle one, and the upper (עֶלְיוֹן).

Almost every use is a builder's or a soldier's detail:

  • the middle floor of the three level structure built around Solomon's temple
  • the middle bar that ran the whole length of the tabernacle frames
  • the middle courtyard a person crossed on the way out of the royal buildings
  • the middle stretch of a night that guards divided into three watches

That narrow range is the point. The word belongs to descriptions of things that were measured, counted, and arranged, so it quietly signals order: someone has already decided how many parts there are, and this is the one in between. Even Gideon's night attack is timed this way in Judges 7:19, at the beginning of the middle watch, which tells a reader exactly how far the night had run.

What scholars say about tikhon

תִּיכוֹן is an adjective built from the noun תָּוֶךְ ("midst") with the adjectival ending -ôn, on the same pattern as תַּחְתּוֹן ("lower") beside תַּחַת and עֶלְיוֹן ("upper") beside עַל. HALOT, BDB, and DCH all give a single sense, "middle," and cite the same small distribution: the middle bar of the tabernacle frames (Exodus 26:28; 36:33), the middle storey of the side structure of the temple (1 Kings 6:6, 8; Ezekiel 41:7; 42:5, 6), the middle court (2 Kings 20:4), and the middle watch of the night (Judges 7:19). The term stays within descriptive and architectural contexts and develops no figurative or theological extension, in contrast to its counterpart עֶלְיוֹן, which becomes a divine title. Two text-critical notes recur in the commentaries. At 1 Kings 6:8 the entrance assigned to הַצֵּלָע הַתִּיכֹנָה is frequently emended to הַתַּחְתֹּנָה ("lowest"), since the winding stair there is described as ascending from the ground; the Masoretic reading is nonetheless defensible and is retained by many. At 2 Kings 20:4 the Kethiv הָעִיר ("city") is corrected by the Qere to הֶחָצֵר ("court"), the reading presupposed by the ancient versions and adopted in modern translations.
