a place in an order or sequence, whether a person's rank or a line of succession
This noun turns up exactly once in the Hebrew Bible, in David's prayer of thanks after God promises that his family will endure (1 Chronicles 17:17). It belongs with a small group of Hebrew words built on the idea of coming round in turn, so it most likely names a place in an arrangement: where someone stands in a sequence.
What that means in the verse is one of the most argued half lines in Chronicles. David has just heard that God will build him a lasting house, and he answers that God has looked on him in a way he can hardly take in. Translators have gone in two directions:
- Many read the word as rank, so that God has regarded David as a person of the very highest standing.
- Others read it as a line of succession, so that God has let David see the generations of people still to come.
The deadlock is hard to break because the same prayer is recorded a second time, at 2 Samuel 7:19, where the matching line reads differently and is every bit as difficult. Some scholars conclude that the wording in Chronicles was damaged as the text was copied; others defend it as it stands. There is no second occurrence to check it against.
Several other words are spelled with these same letters: the verb for exploring or scouting out a land (תּוּר), the noun for a plait of hair or an appointed turn (תּוֹר), the name of the turtledove (תֹּר), and the Aramaic word for an ox (תּוֹר). Only the first two are thought to be related to this word at all; the bird and the ox simply happen to be spelled the same way.

What the word means in its single appearance at 1 Chronicles 17:17, and whether that line has come down intact.
- majorityThe wording can be interpreted as it stands, with the noun naming a place in an order, which is why the lexica give it a sense of its own.; BDB, s.v. תּוֹר; DCH, s.v. תּוֹר
- minorityThe Chronicles wording diverges from the parallel prayer at 2 Samuel 7:19 and may not be original, so no sense for the word can be fixed with confidence.; Gary N. Knoppers, 1 Chronicles 10-29 (Anchor Yale Bible); P. Kyle McCarter Jr., II Samuel (Anchor Bible)
