What qarov means

near: close by, whether in space, in time, in family, or in relationship

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintySettled

This is the ordinary Hebrew word for being close, the plain opposite of "far." Most often it measures physical distance: a city you can reach quickly, a road that is the short way, a neighbor who lives nearby. From that base the word stretches naturally in three directions, and the Hebrew uses one word for all of them.

The first stretch is time. A day or an event that is "near" is one that is about to arrive, almost always with a sense of dread, as in the prophets' repeated warning that the day of the LORD is near. The second is family: a person who is "near" to you is a blood relative, and in legal settings the nearest such relative is the one with the right and duty to act on your behalf, buying back land or carrying a body to burial.

The third, and the most weighted, is relationship. A person can be near to a king as a trusted official, or near to a neighbor as a friend. Israel is called a people near to God, and God in turn is repeatedly said to be near to those who call on him and near to the brokenhearted. Here nearness is not a matter of distance but of access, presence, and care.

These are shades of one idea, not separate words. The same closeness that locates a town also describes a kinsman, a looming day, and a God who does not stay remote. Context decides which kind of nearness is in view.

What scholars say about qarov

Standard lexica treat קָרוֹב as a single adjective from the root meaning to draw near, with a range covering nearness in space, in time, in kinship, and in relationship. BDB and HALOT list these as connected senses of one word rather than as homonyms, and DCH catalogs the same spread across the corpus. TDOT discusses the relational and theological use, especially God being near to his people and to those who call on him, as a development of the basic spatial sense rather than a separate meaning.
