What paraḥ means

1

to bud, sprout, or blossom; to burst into growth, and so to thrive

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintySettled

At its heart this word pictures new growth breaking out into the open: a bud opening, a plant flowering, a shoot pushing up. The blossom is the visible proof that hidden life is at work, which is why the word so often carries a note of vigor and promise.

From that plain picture the Bible reaches easily into figures of speech. A person, a nation, or even the wicked can be said to blossom, meaning they flourish and prosper for a season. The comparison is almost always spelled out with a plant, so the reader is meant to see a person thriving the way a healthy vine or lily does.

The same idea of something bursting out onto a surface is used for a very different subject: a skin disease breaking out and spreading over the body, or boils erupting on skin. Here the word keeps its core meaning, an outbreak that pushes into view, but the thing coming out is a sore rather than a flower. English still reaches for the word break out, the way we speak of a rash breaking out.

to fly

TranslatabilityDirectCertaintyObscure

In one difficult passage the word means to fly, or to be sent flying off, like a bird let loose. This is widely treated as a separate word that happens to be spelled the same as the common word for blossoming, and it matches a word for flying found in related languages.

The single verse where it appears is textually uncertain, and translators handle it in different ways, so this meaning rests on a much thinner base than the blossoming sense.

What scholars say about paraḥ

The standard lexica divide the root into a common verb פרח I "to bud, sprout, blossom, break forth" and a rare, distinct פרח II "to fly." BDB and HALOT treat the outbreak of skin disease in Leviticus 13 to 14 and the eruption of boils in Exodus 9 as an extension of I ("break forth"), the same image of something bursting into view applied to a sore rather than a flower. פרח II "to fly" is posited chiefly for Ezekiel 13:20 on the strength of the Aramaic and later Hebrew verb פְּרַח "to fly"; the verse is textually difficult, and its reading is disputed.

Where scholars disagree about paraḥ

Whether פרח "to fly" (chiefly Ezekiel 13:20) is a genuine second root or a strained reading of the ordinary verb "to sprout, break forth," given the textual difficulty of the verse.

  • majorityA distinct root II "to fly," cognate with the Aramaic and later Hebrew verb "to fly," accounts best for Ezekiel 13:20.; HALOT (Koehler-Baumgartner), s.v. פרח II
  • minorityThe verse is corrupt and its verb should not be pressed into a separate meaning; the reading remains uncertain.; BDB (Brown-Driver-Briggs), s.v. פרח
