What anah means

1

to answer: to respond to what someone has said, asked, or charged

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintySettled

This is the basic verb for responding. Its core idea is reaction to a prompt: someone speaks, asks, or accuses, and this word names the reply that comes back. That is why it fills so much of the dialogue in Hebrew narrative, where a conversation is told as one person speaking and the next answering.

The range stretches naturally from ordinary back-and-forth talk to two more pointed settings. In court it is the response a person gives to a charge, which is how it slides into the idea of testifying or speaking up as a witness, for good or for harm. In prayer it is what God does when he hears: to answer is to act, to grant the request, not merely to reply with words. So when the Psalms beg God to answer, they are asking him to do something, not just to speak.

Across all of these the prompt-and-response shape holds. The senses below sort the contexts where the responder is a person in conversation, a witness under accusation, or the LORD answering those who call on him.

to sing responsively: to lift up a song or chant, often as one group answering another

TranslatabilityDirectCertaintyStrong

A handful of passages use this same verb for breaking into song rather than into speech. The link to answering is not accidental: this is the language of call-and-response, where one voice or choir sings out and another sings back, so that singing is itself a kind of answering.

The clearest cases are the victory songs sung back and forth, the work song over a well, and the antiphonal praise that one part of a crowd lifts to another. Because it is so close to the ordinary sense of answering, a few of these verses can be read either as singing or simply as responding, which is why scholars sometimes treat this as a specialized use of the one verb rather than a separate word.

Disputed

Whether "to sing" is a separate root from "to answer" or simply a specialized use of the one verb.

  • majorityStandard lexica list a distinct verb meaning "to sing", citing the responsive-song passages.; HALOT, s.v. ענה IV; BDB, s.v. ענה III
  • minorityThe "singing" passages are better explained as the ordinary verb "to answer" used of call-and-response song, not a separate root.; TDOT, s.v. ענה (ʿānâ I)

What scholars say about anah

The standard lexica treat the dominant verb here as ענה I "to answer, respond", covering ordinary reply, the response of a defendant or witness in a legal setting, and God's answering of prayer (which carries the active sense of granting). They also recognize a verb "to sing" used of responsive or antiphonal song; HALOT and BDB list it as a separate root, while some treat the singing passages as a specialized use of "to answer". This entry keeps the much rarer "sing" uses as a second meaning while flagging that the split is debated. The verb for "to be afflicted, to humble" is a distinct word carried under its own number and is not treated here.

Where scholars disagree about anah

Whether the verb "to answer" and the verb "to sing" (and, in some analyses, "to be occupied") are separate roots or one verb with several uses. The lexica disagree on how many distinct ענה verbs there are.

  • majoritySeveral distinct roots should be recognized: at minimum "to answer" and "to sing".; HALOT, s.v. ענה I-IV; BDB, s.v. ענה I-IV
  • minorityThe senses are better grouped under a single core idea of responding, with "singing" a call-and-response extension.; TDOT, vol. 11, s.v. ענה
