What saphah means

1

to sweep or scrape away to destruction; and so, in the passive, to be swept away and perish

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintySettled

The picture underneath this word is physical: scraping or sweeping something off a surface until it is gone. A razor sweeps the hair clean off a face (Isaiah 7:20), and from that concrete image the word reaches its common use, removing people or things by destroying them.

Most often it describes disaster falling on the guilty and the danger that the innocent will be caught up in the same sweep. When Abraham pleads over Sodom he asks whether God will sweep away the righteous along with the wicked (Genesis 18:23), and the angels warn Lot not to be swept away in the city's punishment (Genesis 19:15). The same fear runs through the warning to stand clear of Korah's tents (Numbers 16:26).

In its passive uses the word turns to the victim's side: to be swept away is simply to perish, to be finished off. Saul's men will perish in battle (1 Samuel 26:10), David fears he will one day be swept away by Saul's hand (1 Samuel 27:1), and even the beasts and birds are said to be swept off the land under judgment (Jeremiah 12:4).

Hebrew has other words for ruin, but where שָׁחַת pictures spoiling a thing until it is marred, this word pictures removal, scraping something clean off the map.

2

to add or heap up, piling one thing on top of another (usually guilt or wrath)

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintyStrong

Working from the same root idea of scraping, this use points the other direction: not scraping away but scraping together, piling one thing on top of another. It almost always describes heaping up something bad. Moses charges a rebellious generation with rising up to add still more to the fierce anger of the LORD (Numbers 32:14), and Isaiah pictures stubborn people adding sin to sin (Isaiah 30:1).

Because the ordinary word for adding or increasing is a different verb (יָסַף), this heaping sense is easy to miss, and translators sometimes read even these verses as sweeping away instead. The line between the two directions is thin, and one famous verse (Deuteronomy 29:19) has been read both ways.

What scholars say about saphah

The verb ספה covers two ranges that the standard lexica organize either under one entry with two directions or as two homonyms. BDB and Strong's derive both from a basic idea of scraping: scraping away yields the dominant "sweep or snatch away, destroy, be swept away, perish" (with active uses and a common passive), while scraping together yields "heap up, add" (Numbers 32:14; Isaiah 30:1). HALOT and other modern treatments tend to separate the two as distinct roots. The passive uses cluster in warnings of corporate judgment (Genesis 19; Numbers 16), where the fear is that the righteous will be caught up in the destruction of the guilty. Deuteronomy 29:19 is the classic crux, read either as heaping indulgence upon indulgence or as the watered swept away with the parched.
