What natats means

to tear down: to demolish something built, reducing a structure to rubble

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintySettled

This is the standard Hebrew verb for knocking down something that was built up. Its natural objects are constructed things: altars, houses, city walls, towers, and the platforms and shrines of pagan worship. The picture is not a gentle dismantling but a forceful reduction to a heap of stones, wood, and dust, often as an act of judgment, conquest, or religious reform.

From that core the word stretches in two directions. It can describe breaking apart hard things that are not buildings at all, such as a clay oven, a cliff face, or the teeth in a mouth, where the same idea of shattering something solid carries over. And it can be used as a vivid image for ruining a person or a nation, where God or an enemy tears someone down the way a wrecking crew levels a building.

The word keeps strong company. Hebrew writers often pair it with verbs for overthrowing and uprooting, especially when a prophet pictures God dismantling kingdoms before he rebuilds and replants them. Even in those figurative uses, the demolition image stays in view: what is being torn down was once standing, and now it lies in ruins.

What scholars say about natats

The standard lexica (BDB; HALOT; DCH) treat natats as a single verb meaning to pull down or break down, with its prototypical objects being built structures, especially altars, high places, and the architecture of foreign cults, alongside city walls, towers, and houses. The qal carries the basic transitive sense; the piel intensifies or distributes the action over many objects (so the Chronicler's reform notices favor it for smashing multiple altars and images); the niphal, pual, and hophal supply the passive (structures, rocks, an oven being torn down or required to be torn down). Both the breaking of teeth (Ps 58:6, parallel with haras) and the shattering of cliffs (Nah 1:6) extend the same notion of breaking apart something solid, and the figurative tearing down of a person (Job 19:10) or kingdom (the recurring Jeremiah commission, Jer 1:10 and elsewhere, where natats stands among nataš to uproot, haras to overthrow, and the counter-pair banah to build and nataʿ to plant) trades on the demolition image. The sense is uncontested across the lexica.
