What mishḥah means

1

anointing: the sacred rite of pouring or smearing consecrating oil to set a person or object apart for God, and the holy oil used to perform it

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintySettled

This word names the anointing that consecrates. In Israel's worship, applying a specially blended oil was how the sacred tent, its furnishings, and above all the priests were formally set apart for holy service. The word points both to that oil and to the rite it performed.

The two shades hold together because the oil has no meaning apart from the act. Its recipe was fixed by command, the oil itself was called holy, and using it for any ordinary purpose was forbidden. So when Scripture speaks of "the oil of anointing," it is naming the single instrument of a single sacred moment, not a household product.

A few times the word steps back from the oil to name the anointing itself as a lasting institution, as when the ordination of Aaron and his sons is called an everlasting priesthood secured by "their anointing." There it is the act, not the substance, that confers the permanent office.

2

consecrated portion: the share of the offerings assigned to the priests by right of their anointing

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintyStrong

In two places the word shifts from the anointing to what the anointing grants. Because Aaron and his sons were anointed into priestly office, a fixed share of Israel's offerings became theirs by right. The same word that names their consecration comes to name the living they draw from it.

This is why some translations read "portion" or "share" here where others keep "anointing." The two are not far apart: the portion exists precisely because of the anointing, so calling it "the anointing of Aaron" is a natural shorthand for the standing allowance that his anointing secured.

What scholars say about mishḥah

The noun mishchah derives from the verb mashach, to anoint, and denotes the act of anointing and, by metonymy, the consecrating oil used in it (Exodus 30:22 to 33). It is almost always bound to shemen, oil, in the fixed phrase "the oil of anointing," the compounded perfume reserved for sanctifying the sacred tent, its vessels, and the Aaronic priesthood. BDB and HALOT recognize a closely related form, moshchah, meaning a consecrated portion or perquisite of the priests (Leviticus 7:35; Numbers 18:8), where the word names not the oil but the share of the offerings that the priests' anointing secures; the same consonants carry both, the portion being understood as what the anointing confers. TWOT and TDOT trace the wider theology of anointing, in which applying the oil transfers holiness and installs a person into an office held before God, a background that later feeds the terms for the anointed king and the Messiah.
