What metselet means

cymbals: a matched pair of bronze plates clashed together, the instrument the temple singers sounded to lead Israel's praise

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintySettled

Cymbals were two small bronze plates, one held in each hand and struck together to make a bright ring that carried over a crowd. The Hebrew name always takes the form the language uses for things that naturally come in twos, like hands or ears, because a single plate is useless: the instrument is the pair. Every appearance of the word falls in one setting, the organized music of Israel's worship, first at the tent David pitched for the ark and later in the temple.

The cymbals belonged to the head singers rather than to the crowd. Asaph, the chief of the musicians, is the one who sounds them, and the three leading singers, Heman, Asaph and Ethan, are each given bronze cymbals. The word for what they do with them is not the ordinary word for playing an instrument but one meaning to make something heard, to sound it out. That matches what a pair of cymbals actually does among dozens of singers and string players: it cuts through, marks the beat, and signals when to begin and when to swell.

This is the word the writer of Chronicles uses. Where the older account in Samuel describes the same procession bringing the ark to Jerusalem, it names a different instrument (צֶלְצְלִים), and Chronicles puts this word in its place. This later term became the standard name for the temple cymbals, and it is the one Ezra and Nehemiah reach for when the music is restored after the exile.

The result is that the word marks the hinge points of Israel's worship:

  • when the ark is carried up to Jerusalem with shouting and horns,
  • when the cloud fills Solomon's temple as singers and trumpeters sound as one,
  • when Hezekiah reopens the temple and restores the music David had commanded,
  • when the returned exiles lay the foundation of the rebuilt temple,
  • when the repaired wall of Jerusalem is dedicated with thanksgiving and song.

What scholars say about metselet

A dual noun from the root צלל, "to ring, tingle," formed with the מ- prefix typical of instrument nouns; HALOT, BDB and DCH agree without qualification that it denotes cymbals, and the dual is lexicalized (the instrument is inherently a pair) rather than numerical. The distribution is diagnostic of the Chronicler's musical vocabulary: all thirteen occurrences fall in Chronicles, Ezra and Nehemiah, and at 1 Chronicles 13:8 the term displaces the צֶלְצְלִים of the Samuel parallel (2 Samuel 6:5), which suggests it is the later, technical designation for the temple instrument. The governing verb is consistently the causative of שמע, "to cause to be heard" (1 Chronicles 15:16, 15:19, 15:28, 16:5, 16:42; 2 Chronicles 5:13), and the instrument is assigned to the chief singers themselves (Asaph in 1 Chronicles 16:5; Heman, Asaph and Ethan with cymbals of bronze in 15:19), which has led Japhet and others to read it as a directing or signalling function within the Levitical guilds rather than a melodic one. Archaeologically the identification is secure: paired bronze plates of roughly ten to twelve centimetres with a central boss and a thumb loop are attested at Hazor, Megiddo and other sites, as catalogued by Braun.
