What mappelet means

a fall and its wreckage: the crash of something tall or powerful coming down, and the fallen body or trunk left lying where it dropped

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintyStrong

Hebrew builds this noun straight off the ordinary verb for falling (נָפַל) and keeps the verb's picture rather than softening it. Something that was standing is now down, and this one word can point either at the crash itself or at what is left on the ground afterward.

On the concrete side it is the body. Samson goes back to look at the fallen lion, and in Ezekiel the birds of the sky settle on the trunk of a great tree that has been cut down. English needs "carcass" for the animal and something like "fallen trunk" for the tree, but the Hebrew is one word in both places, and it names the thing by the fall that made it.

On the other side it is the fall as an event, and that is where Ezekiel puts it to work. Six of its eight appearances are in Ezekiel, most of them in his funeral songs over Tyre, Assyria, and Egypt, where coastlands shake at the sound of a city's fall and kings tremble on the day of Pharaoh's. Proverbs uses the same word for the collapse of the wicked that the righteous live to see. It is reserved for something big coming down, a sea power, an empire, a towering tree, and never for a person tripping on a step.

Two close neighbors are not the same word. The rubble a destroyed city is left as has its own term (מַפֵּלָה), naming the lasting heap rather than the coming down, and the usual word for a carcass as something unclean to touch (נְבֵלָה) names the dead body with no memory of how it dropped.

What scholars say about mappelet

מַפֶּלֶת is a feminine noun of the maqtal type formed on the root נפל, one of a small set of derived nouns from that root (נֵפֶל, מַפָּל, מַפָּלָה/מַפֵּלָה, מַפֶּלֶת) which the lexica keep formally and semantically distinct. BDB divides the entry in two: "carcass" (Judges 14:8, and of a felled tree at Ezekiel 31:13) and "overthrow, ruin, downfall" (Ezekiel 26:15, 18; 27:27; 31:16; 32:10; Proverbs 29:16). HALOT and DCH (vol. 5) partition the same eight occurrences along the same line, so the sense inventory is not itself in question; Seebass in TDOT treats the nominal derivatives as straightforward specializations of the verb's concrete range rather than as independent lexemes.

The one classificatory question of substance is Ezekiel 31:13, where the birds of heaven dwell עַל מַפַּלְתּוֹ. The phrase may denote the prostrate trunk itself (hence renderings like "fallen trunk" or "ruin") or the felling as an event, and modern commentary on the chapter reads the line within the dirge's larger movement of the cosmic tree brought down to Sheol, so that the birds which once nested in its branches now settle on it where it lies. Either construal yields the same referent on the ground, which is why the lexica do not treat it as a separate sense.

The distribution is itself the striking datum: six of the eight instances are in Ezekiel, five of those in the oracles against Tyre and Egypt, where the noun functions as a keyword of the qinah (lament) form, collocating with the fixed temporal formula בְּיוֹם ("in the day of") at Ezekiel 26:18, 27:27, and 32:10, and with מִקּוֹל ("at the sound of") at 26:15 and 31:16. Proverbs 29:16 supplies the wisdom counterpart of the prophetic usage, the righteous outlasting the regime whose collapse they live to witness.
