What ḥatsav means

to hew: to cut into hard rock by striking it, breaking off or hollowing out the stone

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintySettled

This verb is the word for working rock by force. A worker swings a tool and drives it into stone, chipping and splitting it away rather than gently shaping it. From that one physical act the word spreads across a whole range of jobs: cutting blocks and pillars out of a hillside, digging a cistern or a tomb down into solid rock, prying copper ore out of the ground, and carving letters into a cliff face so they last.

The most common use names a trade. The one who does this work is a hewer, a stonecutter, and the participle form of the verb becomes the standard title for that laborer, especially in the accounts of gathering stone for the temple.

The same striking image also turns figurative. God is said to hew a people down through the words of the prophets, and to have cut the sea monster Rahab to pieces. In these places the verb keeps its violent edge: what is hewn is struck hard and broken apart.

What scholars say about ḥatsav

The standard lexica (BDB, HALOT, DCH) treat this as a single verb whose core sense is to hew or cut hard material, with the qal participle serving as the technical term for the stonecutter or mason. The range covers quarrying and dressing building stone, excavating cisterns, wells, tombs, and winepresses out of living rock, mining copper (Deut 8:9), and engraving (Job 19:24, niphal). The derived noun mahtsev denotes a quarry. Figurative extensions apply the violent cutting image to divine judgment (Hos 6:5) and to the defeat of the chaos monster Rahab (Isa 51:9). Psalm 29:7 is text-critically and interpretively difficult; the verb is generally read as hewing or cleaving out flames of fire.
