What ḥamas means

to do violence: to handle a person or thing with ruthless force, wronging them or stripping them bare

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintyStrong

This is the verb behind the far more familiar noun "violence" (חָמָס). It turns up only eight times, and never for force in general: it always names force used where it had no right to be used, so the act is condemned in the very naming of it.

The eight places show how wide that is:

  • a king is warned never to treat the foreigner, the orphan or the widow this way
  • priests are charged with manhandling God's teaching, forcing it to say what suits them
  • a vine loses its unripe grapes, torn off long before their time
  • God himself is said to tear down the shelter he had put up in Zion
  • a shamed city is left stripped and exposed for everyone to see

What holds these together is not the kind of object but the kind of treatment: something that should have been left whole, honored, or protected is instead seized, torn, or crushed. That is what sets this word apart from its neighbors. Stealing in secret (גָּנַב) is about concealment, and grabbing property in broad daylight (גָּזַל) is about what changes hands; this word puts the weight on the brutality of the handling itself.

The strangest turn comes in Proverbs 8:36, where the violence rebounds on the one who does it: the person who will not have wisdom is said to do this to his own life. It is the same ruthless force, aimed inward.

What scholars say about ḥamas

The standard lexica treat חמס as a single root. BDB glosses the verb "treat violently, wrong," listing the wrongs done to persons (Jer 22:3; Prov 8:36; Job 21:27), the violation of tôrāh (Ezek 22:26; Zeph 3:4), and the shaking off of unripe fruit (Job 15:33), with Lam 2:6 as violent destruction and Jer 13:22 as the one passive occurrence. HALOT arranges the same eight occurrences under three shades (to treat violently or do wrong; to violate; to tear away or strip off) and renders Jer 13:22 "be treated violently"; DCH concurs on one entry. The verb is secondary to the far more frequent noun חָמָס (roughly sixty occurrences), which TDOT and NIDOTTE treat as the semantic center of the root: its force is evaluative, labeling an act as flagrantly wrong rather than merely strong, which is why Jer 22:3 sets it opposite מִשְׁפָּט and צְדָקָה. Two occurrences are genuinely difficult. In Lam 2:6 the simile כַּגַּן has been read as "like a garden" and emended in various ways, and the verb is rendered from "lay waste" to "strip," a range Hillers surveys. In Jer 13:22 נֶחְמְסוּ עֲקֵבָיִךְ is taken either as exposure of the body ("your heels are made bare") or as violence suffered, a split Holladay and McKane both note. Job 15:33 raises the further question, discussed in the commentaries, whether the wicked man or the vine is the subject of the stripping.
