What gevurah means

strength to prevail: the power to overcome, and the mighty deeds that show it

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintySettled

This is the strength that wins. Not bulk or muscle for its own sake, but power aimed at prevailing over an opponent, a task, or a crisis. It is the word for what a warrior brings to battle, what a king displays across a reign, and above all what God shows when he saves his people or rules the nations. So it slides naturally between the capacity itself and the visible acts that prove it.

The senses below trace that movement. At its center sits raw might, which the writers attach to soldiers and horses, to rulers, and to God. From there it reaches in two directions: outward to the concrete mighty acts that put the power on display, and inward to the settled strength of a reign. The plural form almost always means the deeds rather than the bare capacity, which is why translations swing between might and mighty acts for what is one Hebrew word.

The Bible's deepest interest is in God's version of it. Human strength is real but fragile and easily misplaced; the prophets and psalmists keep insisting that the only strength worth boasting in is the Lord's, and that trusting an army's strength instead is a fatal mistake.

What scholars say about gevurah

The standard lexica (BDB, HALOT, DCH) treat gevurah as a single abstract noun from the root gbr, "to be strong, prevail," glossing it "strength, might," with a well-recognized concrete extension in the plural to "mighty deeds, mighty acts" (especially of God). It is the action-oriented member of the Hebrew strength vocabulary, distinguished from koach (latent force/energy), oz (strength as refuge), and chayil (force, resources, army). TDOT and TWOT note its heavy theological concentration in the Psalms and prophets, where the dominant subject is divine power displayed in salvation history and in rule over the nations, and its frequent pairing with wisdom (etsah, chokmah) as the equipment of a true ruler (Isaiah 11:2; Proverbs 8:14; Job 12:13). The recurring Deuteronomistic formula in Kings, "the rest of the acts of X and his might (gevurato)," uses the word for the powerful achievements of a reign.
