What bashal means

1

to boil food in liquid until it is cooked; to seethe or stew, especially meat

TranslatabilityDirectCertaintySettled

This is the ordinary Hebrew word for cooking something in hot liquid. Meat simmered in a pot, stew bubbling in a cauldron, the manna the Israelites gathered and cooked. It is the everyday verb of the kitchen, and of the sacrificial kitchen too, where priests boiled the portions of the offerings.

It stands in deliberate contrast to roasting over an open fire. The Passover lamb, for instance, was to be roasted, never boiled. Yet the word is flexible: a later account can use it broadly for preparing the Passover, and it is used once for cooking cakes, so it does not always mean strictly cooking in water. The steady core is bringing food to a done state by heat and moisture.

Because boiling is the plainest way to cook flesh, this one verb carries both the Bible's holiest scenes and its most horrifying. Priests boil the sacrifices in the temple kitchens; and in the depths of siege famine, mothers boil their own children.

to ripen: for grapes or a grain harvest to come to full maturity

TranslatabilityDirectCertaintySettled

The same verb describes fruit coming ripe. In the cupbearer's dream the vine's clusters swell and ripen into grapes; in Joel the harvest has ripened and the sickle is ready.

The link to cooking is the shared idea that heat brings something to its finished state. As fire and water bring meat to doneness, the sun brings fruit to ripeness. English keeps the two apart with separate words, but Hebrew hears one process of maturing under heat.

What scholars say about bashal

The root is well attested across Semitic (Akkadian bašālu "to cook, be ripe", with cognates in Arabic and Aramaic) and carries a stable range, "cook by boiling / grow ripe". The standard lexica (BDB, HALOT, DCH) treat the two uses as one root: the qal is intransitive ("be boiled/cooked", Ezek 24:5; "grow ripe", Joel 3:13[4:13]), the piel and pual supply the transitive and passive of boiling and cooking, and the hiphil is causative ("cause to ripen", of the vine's clusters, Gen 40:10). The overwhelming distribution is culinary and cultic, the boiling of flesh in domestic pots and in the temple kitchens (Ezek 46:20, 24; Zech 14:21; 2 Chr 35:13); the ripening sense is confined to horticultural contexts. TWOT and TDOT locate the semantic bridge in the notion of heat bringing a substance to its completed state. There is no serious dispute over the lexical sense. The heavily debated milk-and-kid prohibition (Exod 23:19; 34:26; Deut 14:21) turns on the reason for the law, not on the meaning of the verb.
