What topos means

a place: a particular portion of space, literal or figurative, that something or someone occupies

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintySettled

At its core this word names a bounded bit of space: a spot, a locality, a region, the area a thing takes up. Almost every use in the New Testament is a literal location, from a lonely stretch of countryside to a named landmark like the hill called the Skull.

From that base the word stretches in two natural directions. Because some places are set apart for God, it can mean the holy place, the sanctuary, the site of worship. And because a place is something that can be filled or left empty, it slides easily into the figurative idea of room: open space for someone to fit, a chance to act, the possibility of a thing happening at all. So the same word can mark a physical location, a sacred site, the spot in a scroll where a text stands, or the elbow room a person is or is not given.

The senses below sort these out, but they are all one word: a place, and what can be done with the space it names.

What scholars say about topos

Standard lexicons treat topos as a single word with a wide spatial range rather than a set of homonyms. BDAG lays out the literal senses (an inhabited place, a region, a specific spot, a place in a book) alongside the transferred senses of opportunity, possibility, and a person's position or rank. TDNT (H. Koster) traces the same development from concrete place to the figurative "room" and "opportunity," and notes its weight in passages about the holy place and the place of worship. The Septuagint regularly uses it to render the Hebrew maqom, which carries the comparable range, including its use for the sanctuary.
