What sebomai means

to worship: to hold a god in awe and give that god one's settled devotion

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintyStrong

This verb names the reverence behind worship more than the actions that express it. Where λατρεύω names the religious service actually rendered, and προσκυνέω names the bodily act of bowing low before someone, this word names the inward sense that something is holy and has a claim on you. The Hebrew idea closest to it is the fear of God (יָרֵא), which is reverence rather than fright.

On its own it passes no judgment on whether that reverence is deserved or sincere. In the New Testament it covers three things:

  • reverence given to the God of Israel, including worship that Jesus calls empty
  • reverence given to the goddess Artemis by a whole province
  • the settled way of naming Gentiles who revered Israel's God without becoming Jews

That third use is where the word does its heaviest work. Six of its ten appearances describe such people, all of them in Acts: Lydia the cloth merchant in Philippi, Titius Justus next door to the synagogue in Corinth, crowds in Antioch and Thessalonica and Athens. These were Gentiles who came to the synagogue and revered the God of Israel but stopped short of full conversion, and Acts presents them as the ready audience Paul found in city after city. The word comes close to being their title.

Disputed

Whether the worshipers of God in Acts were a recognized class of Gentile adherents to the synagogue, or a way of speaking that Luke shaped for his own narrative.

  • majorityThey were a real and widespread group of Gentiles who attended the synagogue and revered Israel's God without full conversion, attested in inscriptions and in Jewish and pagan writers as well as in Acts.; Louis H. Feldman, Jew and Gentile in the Ancient World (Princeton University Press, 1993); Paul R. Trebilco, Jewish Communities in Asia Minor (Cambridge University Press, 1991); Irina Levinskaya, The Book of Acts in Its Diaspora Setting (Eerdmans, 1996); Joyce Reynolds and Robert Tannenbaum, Jews and God-fearers at Aphrodisias (Cambridge Philological Society, 1987)
  • minorityThe wording is not a fixed designation for an identifiable class; it is Luke's literary way of sketching a bridge audience between synagogue and Gentile city, and the inscriptional evidence does not establish a formal category.; A. T. Kraabel, The Disappearance of the God-fearers, Numen 28 (1981); Kirsopp Lake, Proselytes and God-fearers, in The Beginnings of Christianity, Part I, vol. 5 (Macmillan, 1933)

What scholars say about sebomai

σέβομαι is a middle deponent verb on the σεβ- root (with σέβας, σεβάζομαι, σέβασμα, εὐσέβεια, θεοσεβής), used in classical Greek for the awe felt before what is holy and, by extension, for the cult paid to a deity; LSJ and BDAG agree on this core sense of reverencing or worshipping, and Foerster in TDNT traces the movement from religious scruple to the settled vocabulary of worship. In the Septuagint the verb is uncommon, rendering יָרֵא at Joshua 4:24 and standing in the Isaiah 29:13 text quoted at Matthew 15:9 and Mark 7:7, while φοβέομαι and λατρεύω carry the bulk of the Hebrew worship vocabulary. The New Testament distribution is striking: apart from that Isaianic citation and the two narrative uses at Acts 18:13 (the charge before Gallio) and Acts 19:27 (the cult of Artemis at Ephesus), every occurrence is the substantival participle οἱ σεβόμενοι applied to Gentile adherents of the synagogue, sometimes absolutely (Acts 17:17) and sometimes with τὸν θεόν (Acts 16:14; 18:7). Whether that participle, and the parallel οἱ φοβούμενοι τὸν θεόν, designates a defined social class has been argued since Lake questioned its technical status; Kraabel treated the God-fearers as largely a Lukan literary construct, while Feldman, Trebilco, Levinskaya, and above all the Aphrodisias inscription published by Reynolds and Tannenbaum are widely taken to establish a real and widespread body of Gentile sympathizers. Barrett notes the exegetical difficulty at Acts 13:43, where σεβομένων qualifies προσηλύτων, a group that had already converted.
