What poieō means

to bring something about: to make a thing or to do a deed, so that something now exists or has happened that did not before.

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintySettled

This is one of the busiest verbs in the New Testament, and its range is wide but it has a single center. In every use it points to a person bringing something about, so that afterward there is a thing, an action, or a result that was not there before. English has to split this into two words, make and do, but the Greek does not feel the split: making a thing and doing a deed are the same kind of act to this word, the producing of something real.

From that center the word fans out by what is being brought about. It makes objects (a whip, idols, tents) and it performs deeds (works, signs, sins, acts of kindness). It can take a person or thing and turn it into something else, as when Jesus says he will make fishermen into fishers of people, or when a crowd wants to make him king. With trees it means to bear or yield fruit. With a feast it means to keep or observe it, the way we still say a family keeps Christmas. With a stretch of time it means to spend or pass it. And used on its own, with no object, it simply means to act or to behave.

These are not different words that happen to sound alike; they are the same act seen against different objects. That is why one definition covers them all, and why the senses below are shades of the one idea rather than separate meanings. The reader's only real difficulty is the English one: deciding, verse by verse, whether make or do is the better word for the same Greek verb.

What scholars say about poieō

The standard lexicons treat this as one wide-ranging verb with a unified core, then map its range by object and construction rather than splitting it into homonyms. BDAG lays out the two great branches, to make or produce a thing and to do or accomplish an action, with further well-attested uses: to make someone into something or appoint, to bear fruit, to keep or celebrate a feast, to spend or pass time, and an intransitive to act or behave (BDAG, s.v. ποιέω). LSJ documents the same breadth across classical and Hellenistic Greek, including the make-into and the time-spending idioms (LSJ, s.v. ποιέω). The verb is also the regular Septuagint rendering of the Hebrew everyday word for making and doing, which both reflects and reinforces its width in biblical Greek (so the theological dictionaries). There is no significant scholarly dispute over the verb's meaning; the only recurring discussion is the translator's choice between make and do for a given verse.
