μαστιγόω“to whip”The verb mastigoo, "to flog" or "to scourge," is the ordinary Greek word for beating someone with a whip as a punishment. It is the form the New Testament uses nearly every time, and it is the word Jesus chose when he told his followers what was coming: they will flog you in their synagogues, and they will flog the Son of Man before they kill him. Hebrews then turns it toward God, who whips every son he receives.
