What kauchēma means

a boast: what a person can point to as a reason for pride, and the pride voiced in it

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintyStrong

This noun belongs with the verb "to boast" (καυχάομαι), and Greek builds a noun of this shape to name what an action produces rather than the action itself. So it normally points at the thing a person boasts about, the ground under the boast, while the companion noun for the boasting itself is καύχησις. Paul does not police that line: he lets this word slide over into the boasting too, and swaps the two nouns inside a single argument.

What holds the range together is that a boast here is handled almost like property. It can be handed to someone else, drained until it is empty, or gripped firmly to the end. Because a boast and the thing it rests on are bound so tightly, one word covers either, and the question to ask of a verse is not just whether someone is boasting but what he is pointing at.

That is why the word is not automatically a fault. Paul tells one church that they are his boast and he is theirs, and hopes another church's pride in Christ will grow when he visits. To a third he says flatly that their boasting is not good, because what they were pointing at was their own tolerance of an ugly situation. The word takes its color from whatever stands behind it.

What scholars say about kauchēma

BDAG divides the entry between that which constitutes a ground for boasting and the act of boasting itself, the former covering most of the eleven New Testament occurrences (Romans 4:2; 1 Corinthians 9:15, 16; 2 Corinthians 1:14; 5:12; Galatians 6:4; Philippians 2:16) and the latter accounting for 1 Corinthians 5:6 and 2 Corinthians 9:3. The formation is regular, since Greek nouns in -μα name the result or object of an action, which in principle separates καύχημα from καύχησις, the noun of the action itself. Commentators on 2 Corinthians observe that Paul does not sustain that separation: καύχημα at 1:14 and 9:3 stands beside καύχησις at 1:12 and 9:4 within the same arguments, and Harris allows either the act or its ground at 1:12 to 14. Ten of the eleven occurrences are Pauline, Hebrews 3:6 being the exception. Bultmann's TDNT treatment reads self-referential boasting as the articulation of the self-reliance that stands under judgment, while legitimate καύχημα points away from the self to God; Zmijewski's EDNT article and the Philippians commentaries apply this to the eschatological καύχημα of Philippians 2:16 and 2 Corinthians 1:14, where apostle and congregation are one another's ground of boasting at the day of Christ. At Hebrews 3:6 the phrase τὸ καύχημα τῆς ἐλπίδος is taken by Attridge as the exultant confidence that hope generates, parallel to παρρησία, though the genitive is also construed objectively, the hope in which one boasts.

Where scholars disagree about kauchēma

Whether the ground of a boast and the boasting itself are two distinct senses of this noun or one.

  • contestedTwo senses, listed separately: that which constitutes a ground for boasting, and the act of boasting.; BDAG, s.v. καύχημα
  • contestedEffectively one sense, since Paul alternates this noun with καύχησις inside a single argument, so the form of the word settles nothing about which nuance a given verse carries.; M. E. Thrall, The Second Epistle to the Corinthians, ICC; M. J. Harris, The Second Epistle to the Corinthians, NIGTC
