What engizō means

to come near: to close the gap in space, in time, or in relationship until something is right at hand.

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintyStrong

At its heart this is a simple word about the distance between two things growing small. Someone walks up to a city gate, a traveler falls in step beside two others on a road, a soldier steps forward to make an arrest. In every case the gap closes and the two are now near.

The New Testament keeps that plain picture but stretches it in two natural directions. A moment in time can come near the way a place does: a festival approaches on the calendar, an hour arrives, and most famously the rule of God draws so close that it is as good as here. And a person can come near to God, or God near to a person, the way two people close the space between them, which is the language of worship and prayer.

The same word carries all three because they are the same motion seen from different angles. Whether the thing approaching is a town, an appointed day, or God himself, the point is that what was once at a distance is now close enough to act on. That nearness is what gives the word its weight in the Gospels: when Jesus says the kingdom has come near, he is not measuring miles but announcing that it has arrived at the doorstep.

Disputed

Whether ἤγγικεν in the kingdom proclamation (Matt 3:2; 4:17; Mark 1:15) means the kingdom has already arrived or that it has drawn imminently near but not yet come.

  • minorityThe perfect denotes arrival: the kingdom has come and is present in Jesus' ministry (realized eschatology).; C. H. Dodd, The Parables of the Kingdom
  • majorityThe verb denotes imminence, not arrival: the kingdom has drawn near and is at the threshold but is still future.; W. G. Kümmel, Promise and Fulfilment; BDAG, s.v. ἐγγίζω

What scholars say about engizō

Standard lexica treat ἐγγίζω as the intransitive verb from the adverb ἐγγύς, meaning to draw near, with a unified spatial sense that extends to temporal and relational nearness; BDAG distinguishes literal approach to a place or person from the figurative nearness of time and of God. In the Septuagint it commonly renders Hebrew קרב and נגשׁ, including cultic approach to the sanctuary, which feeds the New Testament's use of drawing near to God in Hebrews and James. The perfect ἤγγικεν in the kingdom proclamation (Matt 3:2; 4:17; Mark 1:15) is the focus of a long debate associated with C. H. Dodd's realized eschatology and the responses of W. G. Kümmel and others over whether it denotes arrival or imminence.
