What allos means

another, other: one more besides the one already in view, of the same general kind

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintySettled

This is the everyday word for "another" or "other." It points away from something already mentioned toward a further item, person, or thing: another servant, another boat, other seed, the other disciple. Most of the time it simply means "one more besides this one," and the surrounding sentence decides whether the new item is just an addition or, occasionally, a pointedly different one.

From this single idea three familiar shades grow. It can add another of the same kind (another parable, another angel). Used on its own it can mean "the others" or "the rest" (some said one thing, others said another). And in a few charged passages it leans toward "a different one" in a critical sense, as when Paul warns against "another gospel" or "another Jesus." These are not separate words but the same word reading differently by context.

The word carries a built-in contrast with its near-twin, the Greek word transliterated heteros (Strong's G2087). In careful classical usage this word meant another of the same kind, while heteros meant another of a different kind. Writers of the New Testament era keep that contrast some of the time but often blur it, so the difference should be weighed verse by verse rather than assumed.

What scholars say about allos

Standard lexicons treat ἄλλος as a single, broadly applicable adjective for "another, other" (BDAG s.v. ἄλλος; LSJ s.v.). The classical distinction from ἕτερος (ἄλλος = another of the same kind, ἕτερος = another of a different kind) is well attested in earlier Greek and noted by the grammarians (BDF §306), but BDAG and others observe that the New Testament frequently neutralizes it, using the two as near-equivalents (e.g. the interchange in Galatians 1:6-7, where ἕτερον εὐαγγέλιον is glossed by οὐκ ... ἄλλο). The substantival "the others, the rest" and the adversative "a different" (2 Corinthians 11:4) are contextual shades of the one adjective rather than separate lexemes.
