What tsud means

1

to hunt: to chase down and catch prey, whether a wild animal or a person pursued like game

TranslatabilityDirectCertaintySettled

At its core this word is the hunter's work: to track, chase, and catch living prey. In its plainest use a person goes out to the field to take a wild animal for food, as when Isaac sends Esau to hunt game and cook it. The Hebrew noun for the catch, ציד, stands right beside the verb in those scenes, so "to hunt" and "the game hunted" belong to one picture.

Most of the time, though, the prey is a human being. The Bible reaches for this word when enemies stalk a person to trap or destroy them: a foe hunts the sufferer "like a lion," attackers hunt someone "like a bird," and violent people close in on one another. The image is not a fair fight but a predator patiently cornering something that cannot escape. That is why the word so often carries menace.

A sharper form of the same idea appears in the false prophetesses of Ezekiel, who "hunt" people's lives with their charms and veils, snaring the vulnerable through fear and deception rather than through open force. It is the same act of catching prey, now aimed at trapping people's very lives.

2

to take provisions: to stock oneself with food and supplies for a journey

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintyStrong

In one scene the word steps away from hunting altogether. When the people of Gibeon come to Israel in worn-out clothes with dry, crumbling bread, they explain that they took this bread "as our provision" when they set out. Here the verb means to equip oneself with supplies for the road, not to chase down prey.

This use grows out of the same word-family: what a hunter catches becomes food to carry, so the noun for "game" also came to mean "provisions," and the verb followed. In this one place the sense is simply stocking up for travel, and the reader should not import the idea of hunting into it.

What scholars say about tsud

The root צוד denotes hunting, the pursuit and capture of prey. The qal covers both literal hunting of game (Gen 27:3, 5, 33; Lev 17:13; Job 38:39) and the metaphorical hunting of persons, where an enemy pursues a life like a predator (Job 10:16; Ps 140:11; Prov 6:26; Lam 3:52; 4:18; Jer 16:16; Mic 7:2). The piel in Ezekiel 13:18, 20 is used of the prophetesses ensnaring נפשׁות ("lives, souls") through their occult bands, and lexica treat this intensive as a distinct nuance, roughly "to ensnare, entrap." A semantically separate use appears in the hithpael of Joshua 9:12 (הִצְטַיָּדְנוּ), "to supply oneself with provisions," widely analyzed as a denominative tied to the noun צֵידָה / צַיִד ("provision, game"); STEPBible's lexicon accordingly lists it as a second sub-entry ("to provision"). BDB, HALOT, and DCH all keep the hunting sense and the provisioning use together under one root while marking their difference; TWOT treats them likewise.
