What erekh means

1

an ordered arrangement: things set out in place, laid out in proper order

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintyStrong

This is the plainest use of the word, and it stays close to the verb behind it, which means to arrange or set something out in order. It names the result of that arranging: a row of things put in their proper places.

The clearest picture is the bread laid out before the LORD on the table in the tabernacle. The word can also describe the ordered frame of a living thing, the way a body is fitly put together, and it can name a matched set, such as an outfit of clothing given as part of a wage.

English has no single word that fits every case, so translators reach for row, arrangement, order, frame, or set depending on what is being laid out.

Nuances

1aa row or ordered setting-out of things, especially the bread arranged before the LORD
Exo 40:4Exo 40:23
1bthe ordered frame or proportion of a body, the way a creature is fitly put together
Job 41:12(4)
1ca matched set or outfit, here of garments
Jdg 17:10
2

an assessed value: a set amount of worth fixed on a person or thing by a standard

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintySettled

This is by far the most common use of the word, and nearly all of it sits in one chapter of Leviticus. When an Israelite made a vow that pledged a person to the LORD, the person was not offered directly; instead a fixed sum was paid to redeem the vow, and the word names that fixed sum. The amount was set by a published scale keyed to age and sex, not haggled over, and a poor person could have it lowered to what they could afford.

Because the amount was a set figure rather than a market price, the word carries the idea of a value assigned by rule. It is used the same way for redeeming a firstborn and for a tax reckoned on each person, and it stretches naturally to the worth of a thing and even to a person reckoned as one's equal, a match of the same standing.

One small feature often surprises readers: the word usually appears with an ending that looks like the possessive your, yet it does not mean anyone's personal valuation. It had become close to a fixed technical term for the set assessment, so English Bibles rightly render it simply the valuation.

Nuances

What scholars say about erekh

The noun derives from the root meaning to arrange or set in order, and its senses fan out from that: a concrete row or layout (Exodus 40:23), the ordered frame of a body (Job 41:12), and, dominantly, a fixed monetary valuation (Leviticus 27). The valuation sense is the subject of extensive treatment in the standard lexica and in Milgrom's Anchor Bible commentary, which reads Leviticus 27 as a graduated redemption schedule rather than a reflection of market slave prices. A recurring philological observation is that the frequent form with the second-person suffix functions as a frozen technical term for the fixed assessment rather than carrying possessive force.
