What yatsat means

to set on fire: to kindle a blaze that consumes something

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintySettled

This verb is about igniting a fire, the moment something is set alight and begins to burn. In the historical books it is what an army does to a captured town: soldiers put the city, its gate, or a field to the torch. That destructive edge stays with the word wherever it goes.

Most often the one lighting the fire is God, especially in the oracles of Jeremiah, where the same phrase recurs like a refrain: I will kindle a fire in her gates, her forest, her cities, and it will not be put out. Here the fire is an image of unstoppable judgment. The word also runs the other direction, describing the aftermath: cities and pastures left burned, or laid in ashes, with no one living in them.

Because fire is such a natural picture for anger, the word can also describe wrath itself flaring up. When Scripture says the LORD's fury was kindled, it borrows the language of a blaze catching and spreading.

What scholars say about yatsat

The lexicons (HALOT, BDB, DCH) agree on a core sense to kindle, set on fire, burn. The verb occurs in the qal (intransitive, to catch fire), niphal (to be kindled or burned), and hiphil (transitive, to set on fire), with the hiphil dominant. It clusters heavily in Jeremiah, where the recurring judgment formula and I will kindle a fire in X, and it will devour applies it to gates, forests, cities, and palaces. Two points are debated. First, several niphal forms spelled נצת describe ruined cities alongside language of desolation and emptiness (Jeremiah 2:15; 9:10-12; 46:19); BDB assigns these to a separate root meaning to be laid waste rather than to burn, while others keep them under this root and treat the desolation as the outcome of burning. Second, in 2 Kings 22:13, 17 the same niphal is applied to the LORD's wrath, a figurative extension well attested for fire verbs (compare חרה).

Where scholars disagree about yatsat

Whether several niphal forms spelled נצת mean to be burned (from this root) or to be laid waste, desolate (from a separate root), in verses about ruined cities such as Jeremiah 2:15; 9:10-12; 46:19.

  • contestedIn these verses the form belongs to a distinct root meaning to fall into ruins or be laid waste, matching the surrounding language of emptiness and no inhabitant.; BDB, s.v. נצה
  • contestedAll these forms belong to this root, to be kindled or burned, and the desolation described is the result of the burning.; HALOT, s.v. יצת
