What bala means

to swallow: to take something wholly in and make it disappear, from gulping food down to engulfing and destroying.

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintyStrong

At its center this word is about something being taken completely in and gone. The plainest picture is a mouth and a throat: a great fish swallows Jonah, hungry cattle and ears of grain swallow up the others in Pharaoh's dream, Aaron's staff swallows the staffs of Egypt's magicians. From there it widens to the ground itself opening its mouth, the earth swallowing Korah and his followers so that they vanish alive.

The same image carries a heavier weight when the thing swallowed is a person, a people, or a city. To swallow someone up is to consume and ruin them past recovery, the way a grave or a flood takes a life and closes over it. Enemies plot to swallow up the helpless; God himself is said to swallow up death forever, and in Lamentations to have swallowed up Zion. The English Bibles often render this side of the word as devour, destroy, or engulf.

A smaller group of uses leans toward confusion and reeling, where what is swallowed is a plan, a tongue, or a person's wits: a counsel undone, speech thrown into disorder, sailors staggering at sea. Some scholars trace these to a separate ancient root that only looked the same, while others read them as the same word pushed to its limit, the mind or the plan swallowed up and lost. Either way the picture holds together: something whole is taken in and does not come back.

What scholars say about bala

The lexica agree on a core meaning to swallow, engulf, or devour, attested across the qal (literal ingestion, the earth swallowing Korah, the fish swallowing Jonah) and especially the piel (intensive: to swallow up, ruin, annihilate, frequent in the laments and the prophets). The disputed point is the homonym question. BDB and DCH parse multiple distinct roots, assigning a cluster of verses about confusion, disordered speech, and staggering (e.g. Psa 55:10 MT, Isa 19:3, Isa 28:7, Psa 107:27) to a separate root (compared with Arabic balaga and notions of confounding or communicating). HALOT and TDOT (Botterweck) are skeptical of the proposed homonym and prefer to read these as the one swallow root extended figuratively, a plan or a tongue swallowed up and lost. Note the versification offset in the Psalms (the Hebrew text numbers Psa 55:10 where English numbers 55:9).

Where scholars disagree about bala

Whether the Hebrew Bible has one verb here meaning swallow or engulf, or a second look-alike verb (related to ideas of confusing or communicating) that the tradition merged with it. The question affects a small set of verses about confusion or reeling, such as Psalm 55:9, Isaiah 19:3, Isaiah 28:7, and Psalm 107:27.

  • majorityThere is essentially one verb, to swallow or engulf, and the confusion sense is that one verb stretched to its limit (a plan or a tongue swallowed up and lost). The proposed second root is treated as doubtful.; HALOT (Koehler-Baumgartner), s.v. בלע; G. J. Botterweck, "בָּלַע," in Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament (TDOT) 2:136-139
  • minorityThere are two (or more) distinct verbs spelled alike: one meaning swallow or engulf, and at least one other connected with confusing, communicating, or reaching, accounting for the verses about disordered speech and staggering.; BDB (Brown-Driver-Briggs), s.v. בלע I, II, III, IV; David J. A. Clines, ed., The Dictionary of Classical Hebrew (DCH), s.v. בלע
