What eleph means

1

the number one thousand, the round figure used to count people, soldiers, animals, time, and value

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintySettled

This is the everyday counting word for a thousand. It carries most of the great tallies in the Bible: the marching numbers of Israel in the wilderness, the size of armies, the weight of silver and gold, the head count of livestock, the years of a long span. In the lists of Numbers and the war reports of Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles it is simply the largest ordinary unit a Hebrew writer reaches for before "ten thousand."

Because a thousand was already a very large number to an ancient reader, the same word often stops being an exact count and becomes a way of saying "a vast amount" or "as good as countless." Promises of a thousand generations, a wish for a thousand thousands of descendants, and the picture of one soldier putting a thousand to flight all lean on the size of the number rather than on the precise figure. The two uses sit on a single scale: a literal tally at one end, an open-ended "more than you can count" at the other.

The count and the round flourish are not always easy to tell apart, and a reader should not assume every "thousand" in a census is meant to be added up to the last digit. The point is usually the scale, not the arithmetic.

a clan or troop: the subdivision of a tribe that supplied its fighting men, and the contingent it sent

TranslatabilityPartialCertaintyContested

Israel was organized for war and government by groups that were called "thousands." A thousand here is not a number but a body of people: the local clan or district within a tribe, and the band of men it mustered for battle. Leaders are appointed "over thousands" the way a modern army has captains over companies, and the heads of these groups are named as a recognized rank.

This is why the same word can describe a place a person comes from. When Gideon protests that his "thousand" is the weakest in Manasseh, and when Bethlehem is called little among the "thousands" of Judah, the word means the clan or family-district, not a count of people. Saul gathers the nation "by your tribes and by your thousands," listing the unit, not a quantity.

The contingent and the literal number stand close together, because a clan that was expected to field a unit could be referred to by the same label as the round figure of a thousand men. Distinguishing them is a matter of reading each passage, and in the muster lists it is not always certain which a writer intended.

What scholars say about eleph

The lexica (BDB, HALOT, DCH) list two homographic entries: the cardinal number "thousand" and a noun denoting a tribal subdivision and the military contingent it supplied (Exod 18:21; Num 1:16; 10:4; Judg 6:15; 1 Sam 10:19; Mic 5:1[Eng 5:2]). The two are widely treated as related, the unit being a "thousand" notionally rather than actually. Since W. M. F. Petrie and especially G. E. Mendenhall ("The Census Lists of Numbers 1 and 26", JBL 77 [1958]), a body of scholarship has argued that 'eleph in the wilderness census denotes such a unit (a clan-muster of variable, sub-thousand size) rather than the literal number, which would reduce the implausibly large totals; G. J. Wenham and C. J. Humphreys develop variants of this reading, while others (e.g. B. A. Levine) defend the figures as intended literal numbers within their schematic frame. The debate bears directly on the census arithmetic and remains unsettled.

Where scholars disagree about eleph

Whether the large "thousands" in the wilderness census (Numbers 1 and 26) and similar muster lists count literal thousands of men or denote clan-units (each a contingent of variable, sub-thousand size).

  • minorityThey are clan or military units, not literal thousands; reading them this way resolves the otherwise implausibly large totals.; G. E.
