What kataskeuazō means

to put something together and fit it out so that it stands finished and ready for use: to build, to furnish, to make ready in advance.

TranslatabilityApproximateCertaintySettled

This is a workman's word. It covers taking materials and turning them into something complete: a boat, a house, a tent with all its furniture set in place. The finishing counts as much as the making. Something handled this way is not merely standing, it is stocked, outfitted, and fit for the job it was meant for.

Three shades follow from that one idea:

  • Noah puts an ark together out of timber, so that something exists which was not there before.
  • The desert tent is set up and stocked with its lampstand, its table, and its bread.
  • A messenger gets a road ready for the king travelling behind him.

In English "prepare the way" sounds like a figure of speech, but the Greek keeps the labor in view: clearing ground, leveling it, making a road fit to travel. That is why the Gospels reach for this word when they quote the promise about the messenger, rather than the ordinary verb for getting something ready (ἑτοιμάζω), which stands right beside it in Luke 1:17.

Hebrews leans on the building side and pushes it as far as it will go. Every house has someone who built it, the writer says, and the one who built everything is God. Set next to the usual Greek verb for putting up a building (οἰκοδομέω), this word adds the note of a job carried all the way through to completion.

What scholars say about kataskeuazō

The lexicons treat this as a single verb with a two-part range. BDAG divides it between constructing or erecting something (the ark in Hebrews 11:7 and 1 Peter 3:20; the house and "all things" in Hebrews 3:3, 4) and putting something into a state of readiness (the way in Matthew 11:10, Mark 1:2, Luke 7:27, and the people of Luke 1:17), and assigns the tabernacle passages of Hebrews 9:2, 6 to the furnishing or equipping side of that second heading. LSJ documents the same spread in classical and Hellenistic usage, where the verb covers equipping ships and armies, furnishing a house, and constructing works, with the perfect passive participle regularly used of a thing fully fitted out. Louw and Nida likewise distribute the New Testament occurrences across a building domain and a readiness domain. At Hebrews 3:3, 4 the commentators debate the referent of the participle and whether verse 4 is a parenthetical aside, but not the sense of the verb itself; Attridge, Ellingworth, and Lane all read it as builder's language deliberately extended to God. At Hebrews 9:2 the choice between "was set up" and "was furnished" remains open, since the compound naturally covers both the erection of the tent and the installation of its contents.
